Delaware, Ohio – Over 7,500 miles from the Northern Mariana Islands, Simon Tang of the Oberlin College track & field team established a new 110m hurdle national record at the All-Ohio Championships on Friday evening.

Registering a personal best of 15.86, the first-year broke the 24-year-old record of 17.31, set by Wayne Pua on July 23, 2002, at the Micronesian Games.

"It feels surreal seeing work turn into progress. I know no better feeling than breaking a 24-year-old record," Tang remarks. "I hope my people are proud, but what I will say is that this is just the start."

"Though I think it's an accomplishment we'll be celebrating many times over the next few years, it's a wonderful occasion for celebration, and a great start to this meet for our team," Head Coach Ben Wach adds.

Alongside Tang, Namu Makatiani ran to a second-place finish in the 110m hurdle prelims, crossing the line in 14.84 and securing a spot in tomorrow's finals.

In the 100m prelims, Dylan Davis ran to a personal best of 13.15, placing 14th overall. Earning a point for Oberlin in the 3,000m steeplechase, Solana Pearl recorded a 49-second personal best of 12:20.16 to place eighth overall.

Over in the throwing circle, Alira Allen led Oberlin in the shot put, launching a personal-best mark of 9.81m.

The Crimson and Gold return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 11, for the second day of the All-Ohio Championships with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events kicking off at noon.
