Granville, Ohio – Carrying the momentum from the opening day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Championships, the Oberlin College track & field team multi-athletes delivered eight event personal bests on Sunday.
With five events remaining in the decathlon and three events remaining in the heptathlon, Kit Evans opened the day running in the 110m hurdles, tying his personal best of 19.90. In the long jump, Averi Williams recorded a mark of 4.37m to place sixth.
Evans followed in the discus, hurling a mark of 27.03m in his opening attempt. In the javelin, Celia Vaughn placed second overall with a personal-best 30.72. Molly Button followed with a personal record of 19.62m to place sixth.
Closing out the heptathlon in the 800m, Oberlin went 3-4 as Vaughn snagged a third-place finish by clocking in a 2:36.15. Button followed just behind, running a personal-best 2:37.98 and improving her time by over six seconds. Williams rounded out the Crimson and Gold squad with a personal best of 2:45.11 to finish seventh.
Jumping 3.45m in the pole vault, Evans followed with a 44.53m mark in the javelin to place third. His highlight of the day came from the final event as the senior registered a personal best of 4:44.49 in the 1,500m, placing second overall, a 22-second improvement.
With the strong weekend, Evans notched a personal best in the decathlon of 5,208 points, sitting just outside of scoring position at ninth overall. Vaughn and Williams tied for sixth with 3,161 points, while Williams followed in eighth with 3,093 points, delivering a third-place tie for Oberlin after the combined events weekend.
"I'm just so proud of Averi, Celia, Kit and Molly. They've worked so hard and learned so much this year, and they were able to show that work in full this weekend," Head Coach
Ben Wach adds. "Anyone who didn't get to see them perform the last two days should be jealous of the experience."
The Crimson and Gold will continue the postseason at the NCAC Championships, hosted by Kenyon on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2. Friday is set to kick off at 9 a.m., while Saturday events begin at 10 a.m.
