Waverley, Iowa – The Oberlin College men's track & field distance medley relay team of
Piers Shirk,
Armand Andry,
Cooper Tanski, and
Liam Newman registered the third-fastest DMR in program history as they competed in the Wartburg Final Qualifier on Friday evening. With stiff competition from teams such as Capital, Nebraska Wesleyan, Saint John's, and Grinnell, this meet brought together teams from all over the Midwest to try their shot at earning a place at the NCAA Division III National Championship.
Competing in just the DMR today and opening up the race with the 1200m leg was Shirk. The third-year started the race off strong for the team, running a split of 3:04 and putting Oberlin in the lead. Shirk handed off to classmate Andry, who continued the momentum, running a 49.97 and keeping the Yeomen in the number one spot. The baton was then handed off to Tanski, who ran a time of 1:55.39 and kept the Yeomen in the race. The final handoff put Newman in the heat of the race, where the fourth-year was able to hold off the competition to take second in the heat for the team with a split of 4:20. The team's finishing time was 10:11, which converts to a 10:02 on a 300m track.
"The relay competed really well, and they should be very proud of how they handled what can feel, being in such a high-quality meet, like a really big moment," Assistant Coach Izzy Alexander adds. "Their time is now the third-fastest time in school history, and since today's race was on a 200m flat track, the time converts to quite a bit faster than what they ran at the conference meet last weekend on a 300m track."
Oberlin will split action between two meets tomorrow, Saturday, March 7, with some of the Yeomen competing in individual events at Wartburg, and another group competing at Ohio Northern.
