Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College track & field combined events squad made the trek to Wooster, Ohio, for the second and final day of the NCAC Combined Events Championships. The trio of
Celia Vaughn,
Averi Williams, and
Molly Button contested all five events of the pentathlon, while
Kit Evans closed out the heptathlon.
Vaughn scored 1,865 points to place 11th, Button scored 2,194 to place ninth, and Williams scored 2,300 to place eighth. Evans ended the heptathlon with 3,809 points, placing 10th.
The pentathlon kicked off the day, starting with the 60m hurdles. Vaughn cruised to a season best of 11.20 for 504 points, while Button (11.63) and Williams (10.50) achieved personal bests to score 438 and 621 points, respectively.
Next in the event order was the high jump, where Williams cleared 1.35m for 460 points, and Button cleared a near personal best of 1.44m for 555 points.
Moving to the throws circle, the pentathletes had the shot put as the third event. Button's mark of 7.00m scored 335 points. Williams heaved a personal best of 7.65m for 377 points. Leading the squad in the shot put, Vaughn launched a mark of 8.74m for 447 points.
The Crimson and Gold were tightly grouped in the long jump, with Button (4.23m/362 points) just ahead of Vaughn (4.16m/345 points) and Williams (4.13m/338 points).
The 800m closed out the pentathlon, with Vaughn running a gutsy race to take second in 2:40, scoring 569 points. Staying close together for the entire race, Williams and Button finished in near-identical times, with their placement being decided by a couple of thousandths of a second. They both ran 2:46, scoring 504 points.
As for the heptathlon, Evans also started his day with the 60m hurdles. The senior ran a 10.89 for 385 points. He followed that with the pole vault, soaring over 3.45m to take a personal best and 469 points.
Finishing out the weekend, the fourth-year ran a seven-second personal best of 2:53 in the 1000m, taking third place and earning another 730 points.
Head Coach Ben Wach is excited to carry the momentum generated by the combined events squad forward into the conference championships next weekend. "If the whole team competes next week with the focus, resilience, and willingness to risk that Kit, Celia, Molly, and Averi showed over the last two days, we're going to have a thrilling weekend," Wach said. "We're so proud to have been led into the championships by those four!"
Select qualifiers will compete in the NCAC Championships hosted by Wittenberg next weekend starting on Friday, February 27. The first event is scheduled for 12 p.m.
