Berea, Ohio - The Oberlin track team made the quick drive to Berea, Ohio, to compete in the Dr. Taraschke Team Challenge, hosted by Baldwin Wallace. The Crimson and Gold competed against fellow NCAC member John Carroll, as well as Hiram and Case Western Reserve. The women's team achieved 24 personal bests and one conference qualifying mark, while the men's team notched 18 and three, respectively.
Highlighting the day for Oberlin, the women's distance medley relay (DMR) team of Mirabel Adams, Ella Wozek, Samantha Soto, and Amber Borofsky won the event in a meet record of 13:00, breaking the previous record by three seconds.Â
The meet was kicked off by the weight throw, with the women's squad bringing in many personal bests. First-year Quinn Hardy led the Crimson and Gold, throwing 10.69m. Hardy was followed by classmates
Spencer Hekl (9.51m),
Adriana Winkelmayer (8.9m), and
Kate Budde (7.56m).
Shotput followed the weight throw, with Hardy throwing another personal best, launching the shot to 8.84m. Continuing the momentum of personal bests for the women's team, first-year Molly Button leaped 4.41m in the women's long jump, while second-year
Averi Williams jumped for 4.32m.Â
The men's triple jump followed, with third-year Dane Mentore and second-year CJ Cooper flying to 13.49m and 10.21m, respectively.Â
The field events were concluded for the day with the high jump, where fourth-year Namu Makatiani debuted by clearing 1.83m.Â
The women's DMR started the running events, with the Crimson and Gold racing confidently through each of the legs (1200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m) to establish a new meet record. Clocking in a time of 13:00, the quartet beat the previous record of 13:03Â set by Carnegie Mellon's team in 2022.
Fourth-year Kit Evans continued the hot streak, running a personal best of 9.75 in the 55m hurdles.
In the women's 55m, Yrva Desormeaux (7.74),
Dylan Davis (7.81),
Sawyer Ramberg (7.93),
Val Harris (8.00), Williams (8.16), and Button (8.48) all ran personal bests. Even converting these times to 60m, the personal bests still stand
Continuing the trend in the men's 55m, George Buckman (7.00),
Josiah Howard (7.04),
Simon Tang (7.15), Cooper (7.21), and
Josh Moray (7.28) all snagged personal bests.
First-year Ryan Faris led the way in the men's 5.000m, running a debut personal best of 15:48. Third-year
Will Gordon was just back, crossing the line in 16:00 for an indoor personal best. Closing out the personal bests for the men's 5000, the duo of
Grant Hirsch and
Daniel Beyda worked together for the majority of the race, with Hirsch taking away a debut best of 16:40 and Beyda doing the same in 16:47.
Matching Faris's leadership, first-year Chelsea Larsen led the way for her class in the women's mile in a personal best of 5:33. Fellow first-year
June Essinger followed suit in a debut best of 6:06, with classmate
Zoe Engel rounding out the trio in a personal best of 6:37.
Continuing the success for the first-years, Kai Bell-Torres earned a debut personal best in the 400m, crossing the line in 54.27.
In the women's 800m, Soto, Borofsky, and Adams all returned from the DMR. Soto ran a faster open 800m than her relay split, earning a personal best of 2:30. Borofsky won her heat with a four-second personal best of 2:34. Rounding out the 800, Adams closed for a debut best of 2:38, with fourth-year Serafina Yan just behind in a new personal best of 2:40.
Ramberg returned for the women's 200m, notching a hefty indoor best of 27.85. Buckman and Tang returned for a pair of debut bests in the men's 200m, running 23.84 and 24.58, respectively.
First-year Lieke Everts closed out the day of personal bests for the Yeowomen by taking first in the 3,000m in a debut best of 11:08.Â
Cooper Tanski and
Greydan Villano ended the run of personal bests for the Yeomen, with Tanski running a patient and decisive race to take the win in a debut best of 9:03. Villano, for his part, ran a bold and mostly solo race for a debut best of 9:36.
The Crimson and Gold will host the Dan Kinsey Invitational on Friday, February 6, in the Heisman Field House. Hosting their Pride Meet, the first event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
