Delaware, Ohio - The Oberlin College track and field teams traveled to Delaware, Ohio, to compete against Ohio Wesleyan and Allegheny in the OWU Team Challenge. The women's team claimed 20 personal bests, while the men's team earned five conference-qualifying marks and 17 personal bests.
The meet was kicked off with the men's long jump, with the duo of fourth-year Kit Evans and third-year
Dane Mentore leaping to personal bests of 5.82m and 6.33m, respectively. With a jump of 6.33m, Mentore's mark meets the conference-qualifying standard.
In the women's high jump, first-year Molly Button flew to a personal best of 1.43m.
Following the high jump was the men's pole vault, in which first-year Ben Idinopulos vaulted to a personal best of 3.65m.
In the men's shot put, Evans chucked a personal best of 10.74m. In the women's shot put, first-years
Adriana Winkelmayer,
Kate Budde, and
Quinn Hardy hurled their way to PRs of 8.62m, 8.36m, and 8.20m, respectively, all by over half a meter.
The men's weight throw was next in the day with personal bests earned by the duo of third-year Abraham Cromartie V (14.56m) and second-year
Judah Moenoa (13.47m). Cromartie's mark both qualifies him for the conference championship and moves him up on the Oberlin Top-10 All-Time list, where he was previously 10th.
The women's team notched four more personal bests in the women's weight throw. Second-year Mary Howell improved her previous best with a mark of 9.78m, while Hardy and Budde threw 10.46m and 7.03m to improve their former bests. Continuing the success for the throwers, third-year
Spencer Hekl launched a personal best of 8.91m.
In the women's 60m hurdles, fourth-year Celia Vaughn crossed the finish line with a time of 11.66, marking a personal best. Classmate
Namu Makatiani competed in the next event, the men's 60m hurdles, where he took first and ran a personal best of 8.37.
In the men's 60m dash, Mentore crossed the finish line with a personal best of 7.55 seconds. Makatiani ran a personal best of 7.26 seconds, and second-year CJ Cooper ran a debut personal best of 7.93 seconds.
In the men's mile, first-year Cooper Tanski ran an engaged and competitive race for his mile debut, crossing the finish line with a personal best of 4:30. Third-year
Samuel Mortensen ran a debut of 5:12. In the women's mile, first-year
Chelsea Larsen ran a PR of 5:34, closely followed by classmate
Lieke Everts, crossing the finish line with a PR of 5:36. Next to cross the finish line was second-year
Samantha Soto running a debut best of 5:45. First-years
Mirabel Adams and
Zoe Engel ran debuts as well, with Adams crossing the line in 5:53 and Engel in 6:44.
The men's 4x200m followed the mile, with the Oberlin team consisting of fourth-year Euan Uliassi,
Raluchi Obioha,
Andres Adam, and
Josiah Howard. The team ran a season-best 1:36 and placed second.
Fourth-year Ella Wozek competed in the women's 400m for the Crimson and Gold and finished with a time of 1:03.8. In the women's 800m, classmates Everts, Larsen, and June Essinger remained in a pack throughout the race and finished in 2:34, 2:36, and 2:38, with all three running personal bests.
Liam Newman led a string of personal bests in the men's 3000m. The fourth-year notched a debut personal best of 8:44, qualifying him for the conference championships and placing him on Oberlin's Top 10 All-Time list in the event. Following Newman was first-year
Ryan Faris, also debuting in a 9:15. The second-year duo of
Daniel Beyda and
Grant Hirsch finished close together, posting personal bests of 9:27 and 9:35, respectively.
Second-year Solana Pearl ran a debut best of 11:31 in the women's 3000m, running even solo laps for the majority of the race. Fourth-year
Amber Borofsky had one of the best races of her career, moving up patiently over the course of the race to ultimately close hard for the win and a 15-second personal best of 10:55.
The women's 4x400m closed out the meet for the Crimson of Gold, with the Oberlin team being composed of second-year Yrva Desormeaux,
Ryley Steggall,
Clara Smith, and Wozek. The quartet took second place and ran a season-best 4:23.
The Crimson and Gold will resume action on Friday, January 30, at the Dr. Taraschke Team Challenge, hosted by Baldwin Wallace. The first event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
