Oberlin, Ohio - Oberlin College track and field juniors
Kit Evans and
Celia Vaughn competed this weekend at the NCAC Combined Events Championship, hosted at home. Evans scored 4535 points in the decathlon to place seventh, while Vaughn scored 3118 points in the heptathlon to place eighth.
Evans resumed the decathlon today, after contesting the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m yesterday. Today's first event was the 110m hurdles, in which Evans clocked a personal best of 20.47 to score 313 points. Next, in the discus throw, the decathlete flung the disc 26.23m for 391 points.
In the pole vault, Evans sprung over the bar at 3.35m to place fifth. The mark was a personal best by five centimeters and good for 444 points.
Evans showed off his javelin prowess in the penultimate event, throwing 40.76m for second place and 453 points.
Finally, Evans finished fourth in the grueling 1500m run. Evans' time of 5:06.84 scored him 521 points, and was just off of his personal best. Evan's had been dueling Wooster's Vell Robinson for valuable conference points over the course of the decathlon, and the junior's 1500m ensured that he came away ahead.
Vaughn, for her part, completed the heptathlon today, having completed the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200m yesterday. Vaughn resumed the heptathlon with the long jump, sailing to a season best of 4.27m for 371 points.
The veteran heptathlete followed the long jump with the javelin. Vaughn, showing her strength in the event, threw a season-best mark of 30.48m for third place and 486 points.
Rounding out the heptathlon, Vaughn ran a gutsy 800m to place fourth in a time of 2:34.96, battling Wooster's Amelia Mitchell to the line. Vaughn's 800m scored her 632 points, claiming the last scoring position ahead of Mitchell.
This weekend's combined events kick off the NCAC outdoor track and field championships. The main championship will take place in Greencastle, Indiana on Friday, May 2nd and Saturday, May 3rd.
