Westlake, Ohio – Continuing what has been a historic season, the Oberlin College field hockey team earned a several North Coast Athletic Conference postseason honors.
Headlining the awards,
Jess West and
Emily Harris were named the NCAC Coaching Staff of the Year. This is the just the third time in program history that the Crimson and Gold have won the major award.
"Being named Coaching Staff of the Year is an incredible honor, especially knowing this recognition comes from our peers who have seen firsthand how far our program has come." Head Coach West continues, "Our players have worked tirelessly to build a culture centered on growth, grit, and genuine connection, and it's exciting to see that effort reflected in both our progress on the field and the respect we've earned across the conference."
New to the helm this year, Harris has brought a plethora of experience from the highest level of competition to Bailey Field. Guiding the offense, Harris' attack increased their output from seven points last season to 40 this year. Additionally, the offense has taken 93 more shots this season than they did in 2024.
On the defensive end of the field, West's backline has held opponents to just 24 goals this season, a significant decrease from last year's 50. West also led the Yeowomen to their best five-game start since 2017, and tie for their winningest season since 2011.
Bella Tilford was named to the NCAC First-Team All-Conference as a midfielder; a feat not done by an Obie in over ten years.
Janny McCormick and
Elly Scheer were also rewarded for an outstanding season with Second-Team All-Conference honors. This is the first time that Oberlin has landed a player on the First-Team since Maggie Gossiaux earned the honor in 2016.
"We could not be prouder of Bella, Elly, and Janny for earning All-Conference honors. Their recognition is well deserved and speaks to their consistency, leadership, and competitive drive. Elly and Janny have been outstanding senior leaders, and seeing Bella move from Second Team last year to First Team this season is a huge accomplishment." West states, "It's been a long time since Oberlin Field Hockey has had a First Team selection, and that makes this moment even more special for our program."
A third-year out of the Bluegrass state, Tilford has been a critical part of the midfield, and started and played in all 13 games this season. Scoring nine points and leading the team in assists with three, Tilford was involved in nearly every goal scored by Oberlin this year. This is Tilford's second time earning postseason honors after making the Second-Team All-NCAC list in 2024.
One of the greatest goalies this decade, McCormick delivered an outstanding senior campaign with 75 saves and a career-best 1.84 goals against average. Additionally, the Virginia native crossed the 300-save milestone during the team's battle against Wittenberg on October 5. Finishing the year with 347 saves on her career, McCormick etched her name in the record books as fifth in program history for career saves. This is her second time on the NCAC list, last earning Second-Team accolades in 2023.
A leader in the backfield, Scheer collected 22 defensive saves over her career, including an incredible ten in 2023. This year, the veteran helped Oberlin to their lowest opponent shot total in the modern statistical era. For the third time in her career, Scheer earns All-NCAC honors after a standout year on defense. Earning Third-Team in 2024 and 2023, Scheer earns Second-Team accolades for her senior season.
"This season was a very special one to watch, because of the commitment to growth each player brought to the field every day. These accolades reflect the "One Team" mentality that was displayed throughout the entirety of the season, pushing them into a more consistent and cohesive unit." Harris added, "To see our players receiving these recognitions is extremely deserved, with all three of these players in important leadership roles this season, they were the propellers to the new bar being set for the future of Yeo field hockey. I am so proud of how much this team has accomplished this season, and I cannot wait to continue striving forward together."
While Scheer and McCormick graduate in the spring, Tilford returns to a unit ready to build upon this year's success.
