Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College field hockey team notched its second straight victory, defeating the visiting Medaille College Mavericks 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Oberlin scored three first-half goals and never looked back. Their offensive output was the largest in a single game since September 2, 2017 when they beat Lindenwood University-Belleville 5-2.
The Yeowomen employed a diverse offensive attack as four different players accounted for the five goals. First-year
Txuxa Doherty-Konczal led the way with a pair of scores.
It was Doherty-Konczal who deposited the game's first goal as she found space in the middle and roped a shot past Kristyn Clare less than seven minutes into the contest. Under three minutes later a cross from the far side by
Ruby Schreiber was finished off by
Meredith Warden to stake the Yeowomen to a 2-0 advantage after one period.
Midway through the second the duo would reverse roles Warden cashed in a feed from Schreiber to give Oberlin a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Early in the third quarter,
Susan Robinson-Cloete would notch her first-career goal of a beautifully designed corner play with two passes from
Vanessa Baker and
Elly Scheer and with just over six minutes to play in the game Doherty-Konczal found the back of the cage for a second time to cap the scoring for Oberlin.
The Mavericks would avoid the shutout as Regan Haberl pushed one past
Janny McCormick with 46 ticks left to expire. Post made two saves in 54 minutes of work before giving way to McCormick.
Oberlin finished with a 17-5 advantage in shots and 13-2 margin in penalty corners.
The Yeowomen are back in action next Saturday at home against DePauw with the opening whistle set for high noon.
