Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin College Track and Field teams opened their spring season with the Oberlin College Spring Opener on Saturday highlighted by a record breaking performance from
Malaïka Djungu-Sungu.
Kicking it off in the field was
Hayden Hill who earned first place with a jump of 1.54m (5-00.50) in the women's high jump.
Aesha Mokashi kept the ball rolling in the women's long jump event with a leap of 4.98m (16-04.25) to earn gold as well. In the women's hammer throw event Oberlin took 1
st and 3
rd as
Iyanna Lewis and
Shayla Keegan 50.94m (167-01) and 45.04m (147-09), respectively. This marks both the juniors first times throwing in the hammer event. Throwing for the Yeomen in the javelin throw,
Theo Haviland finished third with a score of 47.60m (146-04). On the women's side,
Maggie Allen finished third as well with a throw of 30.26m (99-03). In the final field event, both
Kofi Asare and Djungu-Sungu earned first place finishes with jumps of 13.74m (45-01.00) and 12.05m (39-05.25), respectively. Djungu-Sungu's jump shattered her previous best of 11.70m and broke the school record set by April Wynn back in 2001.
On the track, Oberlin continued their success starting with a second place finished in the women's 4x100m relay. The team of Djungu-Sungu,
Sarah Voit,
Heather Benway, and
Jada Kennerly put together a time of 51.42. On the men's side Asare
Reese Hyatt,
Cole Fuller, and
Sam Fechner ran for a time of 43.70 which comes within .94 of the school record. For the 1500m run,
Sage Reddish finished first overall as the only runner to hit sub-five minutes.
On the men's side of the 1500m run,
Jonah Barber finished third with a time of 4:09.47 while Johnny Ragsdale finished seventh at 4:15.49. As the day continued,
Clare Tiedemann finished first in the 100m hurdles (15.29) before both
Katy Wearing and
Kambinachi Obioha earned bronze in the 400m dash with a time of 1:03.90 and 51.22, respectively. In the 18
th event, Fuller ran the best time of the six-person group for a final of 57.18 in the 400m dash. Fechner also ran a solid time of 11.63 to finish third in the 100m dash, closely followed by Hyatt with a time of 11.65. Djungu-Sungu kept the success coming for the Yeowomen with a second place finish in the 200m dash (27.73) before
Carson Franks finished fifth with a time of 23.52.
The Crimson and Gold will be at home once again for their next meet. The Bob Kahn Invitational will take place from Friday, April 8 to Sunday, April 10.
