Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team welcomed a plethora of players from John Carroll, Denison, Tiffin, Case Western, and Wooster this past weekend for its annual invitational event.
"It was another good weekend for us to challenge ourselves and get better," Head Coach
Eric Ishida said. "I thought we did a good job battling in some tough spots and it was nice for our guys to get in some quality work."
Nathan Englehart,
Sebastien Naginski, and
Sam Topper led the Yeomen in singles action, each going 2-0 on the weekend. Englehart was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Tiffin's Benjamin Szarek and he would also take down the Dragons' Alex Thatcher 6-3, 6-0. Naginski surrendered just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ryan Gase of Tiffin for his first-career collegiate win before setting aside Nebyou Minassie of Wooster by matching 6-2 counts. Topper, a senior from Irvine, California, was a 6-0, 6-2 victor over Connor Streeter of Wooster before outlasting John Carroll's Grant Sarnowski in a three-set affair 6-2, 2-6, 10-2.
Sean Billerbeck and
James Dill led the doubles effort going 2-1 on the weekend. The duo were 8-1 winners over Denison's Colin Gramley and Andy Mackler as well as 8-3 victors over the Blue Streaks pairing of Logan Langovsky and Mark Beebe.
Henry Bulkley and
Ben Echikson added an 8-6 triumph over another pairing from JCU, while Topper and
Rohan Gold recorded an 8-2 win over Tiffin's Gase and Daniel Martinez Roca of Tiffin.
The Yeomen will play their first dual match of the season tomorrow against Division II Walsh University. The first serve is set for 11 a.m.
