Oberlin Falters Against #11 Kenyon

By James Foster '26

Gambier, Ohio - The Oberlin College Yeomen lost 7–0 to #11 Kenyon College on Wednesday evening.

The team got off to a tough start in doubles play. Oberlin's No. 3 duo, first-years Oliver Knijnenburg and Max Brose, were engaged in a back-and-forth affair that saw them break serve early before dropping serve twice en route to a 6–4 loss against Rishil Kondapaneni and Jay KedarDixit. In the No. 1 doubles match, third-year Shawn Lisann and first-year Brady Huggett were overwhelmed in a 6–1 loss to the No. 25 duo in the nation, Paulo Pocasangre and Alejandro Gonzalez, while second-year Zain Makada and first-year Enrique Margain fell 6–2 to Kenyon's No. 2 team, Josh Finkle and Eric Zhang.

The Yeomen couldn't win more than three games in five out of six singles matches. The lone bright spot for the Yeomen was second-year Ben Tichauer, who trailed 6–2, 5–3, 40-30, before mounting an impressive comeback. Tichauer reeled off the next four games to send the No. 6 singles match into a super tiebreak. In the end, Tichauer saved four match points before eventually falling 6–2, 5–7, 10–7.

In No. 1 singles, Makada took on Pocasangre, the No. 16 player in Division III. Makada was able to win two deuce points in the second set but couldn't grab another game in a 6–0, 6–2 loss. In the No. 2 singles match, Margain won a deuce point early in the first before Gonzalez stormed through the rest of the match in a 6–1, 6–0 win for the Owls.

Brose battled hard in the first set and was able to keep Kondapaneni within striking distance before the Owl broke Brose's serve for the second time and ran away with the No. 3 match for a 6–2, 6–1 victory. Huggett grabbed the penultimate game in a 6–0, 6–1 loss to Kenyon's No. 4 Juozas Cioladis, while Knijnenburg lost by the same scoreline to Rakkan Audeh in the No. 5 match.

The loss drops Oberlin to 2–4 in conference play and 5–12 on the season. The Yeomen are back in action this Saturday at the Hunsinger Courts for their last match of the regular season.
