Box Score Hilton Head, South Carolina — The No. 37-nationally ranked Oberlin College men's tennis team cruised to a 8-1 spring break victory over the University of St. Thomas Tommies on Wednesday.
The Yeomen took all three doubles points.
James Dill and
Elliot Nuss defeated the St. Thomas No. 2 pairing by a 8-3, with
Matthew Gittings and
Zachary Vaughn winning the third flight by the same score.
Stephen Gruppuso and
Camron Cohen took the top flight by a final of 8-4 over St. Thomas' Sterling Sibley and Tristan Fjelstad.
With the 3-0 lead in hand, the Yeomen would ultimately put the match in the win column after Gruppuso took down Sibley (6-0, 6-1) and Nuss recorded the match point at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3).
Cohen, Dill and
Sam Topper added to their career wins totals after the match point. In the second flight, Cohen defeated Nick Vossen (6-1, 6-4), Topper defeated Shan Varma in the fifth spot (6-0, 6-1), and the team's fourth singles player Dill comeback to beat Jordan Schenk (4-6, 6-1, 10-6).
The Yeomen, who have won three of their last four matches, improve to 4-8 on the year, and handed St. Thomas just its fourth loss.
Oberlin will be back in action in Hilton Head on Thursday as they face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater starting at 11 a.m.
