Box Score Rochester, NY – The Oberlin College men's tennis team was unable to keep pace with the University of Rochester YellowJackets, falling 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Rochester, which ranks 32
th in the nation, made an early statement in doubles play as they swept through the Yeomen and dropped just five games along the way.
The singles battles were much more closely contested but the Yeomen managed to come out on top in just one dual. It was Oberlin junior ace
Stephen Gruppuso who dispatched Masaru Fujimaki by matching 6-3 scores in the top position.
At No. 2
Zachary Vaughn and Runjia Fang needed three sets to determine a winner. Vaughn opened the match with a 6-3 victory but Fang made the proper adjustment to defeat him by same score in each of the next two sets.
The third and fourth flights were also close as
Camron Cohen fell 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), to Yifan Shen while
Elliot Nuss dropped a 7-5, 6-2, decision to Tanmay Thakkar.
The No. 6 battle between
James Dill and Peter Huang needed three sets to determine a winner. The Yeomen rookie won the first set 6-3 and nearly took the match before falling 7-6 (7-5) in the second-set tiebreak. In the super-breaker the race to 10 went to Huang as he won 10-5.
The Yeomen, who have played one of the toughest early-season schedules of any Division III team in the country, are now 1-6 on the year. The YellowJackets remain unblemished at 5-0.
