CLEVELAND, Ohio - In a battle of regionally ranked, Greater Cleveland rivals, Oberlin College men's tennis was bested by the Case Western Reserve University Spartans, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon.
The loss pushes the Yeomen to 13-8 on the year and snaps a two-match win streak. The setback against the East Side Spartans also moves the Oberlin men to 9-4 against regional opponents.
The Spartans got out to a 2-1 lead through doubles action by taking the no. 2 and no. 3 matchups.
Manickam Manickam and
Levi Kimmel fell at no. 3, 8-2, and
Abraham Davis and
Stephen Gruppuso went down swinging, 8-3, in the no. 2 flight.
The lone doubles victory for the Yeomen came from the tandem of
Ian Paik and
Jeremy Lichtmacher in an 8-6 barnburner in the no. 1 bout.
In singles action, Paik and
Michael Drougas were winners on Sunday afternoon, taking the no. 1 and no. 2 battles from the Spartans. Paik got past his Case Western counterpart in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to take the premiere match for the Yeomen. At no. 2, Drougas also captured a straight set win with identical 6-2 set scores.
A sweep of no. 3 through no. 6 gave the 12th ranked Spartans the match and their seventh consecutive win.
At No. 3, Gruppuso nearly pushed the match to three sets, but fell, 6-2, 7-6. Manickam suffered a three set, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 and at no. 5,
Robert Gittings was defeated, 6-4, 6-4.
Paul Farah occupied the no. 6 spot on Sunday, falling in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The Yeomen return to the court on Saturday, April 15 when they head to Gambier, Ohio and Kenyon College for a date with the Lords.
Action on Saturday is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
