Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Results vs. CSU l Results vs. Niagara

Cleveland, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team tested itself against a pair of Division I foes on Saturday as they tussled with the Vikings of Cleveland State and the Purple Eagles of Niagara University.

Both matches were played to clinch, with doubles action being suspended after a team picks up two wins and singles play ending after a team reaches four points on the match.

The Yeomen fell to Vikings, 4-0, but gave a strong fight in a tight 4-2 loss to the Purple Eagles.

CSU Recap

The Vikings were winners in the top two doubles flights, but the Yeomen had the lead in the third when the match was halted. Abraham Davis and Michael Drougas were ahead of Mirko Radosevic and William Malm 5-4, but by virtue of the wins at No. 1 an No. 2, the Vikings took the team point.

Ian Paik and Jeremy Lichtmacher were topped by Colton Buffington and Kevin Goth 6-3 at No. 1, while the freshmen duo of Stephen Grupuso and Camron fell to Nico Mostardi and Andre Mick, 6-2.

The top three singles flights were all left unfinished as the Vikings clinched the match with wins in positions four through six.

In the second position, Davis was up a set against Malm as he took with first 7-6 (7-5).

Grupusso also held his own at No. 3  as he fell in the first to Benjamin Slade, 7-5, and was leading in the second 3-2 when the match was halted.

At No. 4, Manickam Manickam fell to Radosevic 6-1, 6-0, while Billy Lennon was dispatched by Jack Santilli by matching 6-2 score lines at No. 5. In the sixth position, Goth also got the best of Lichtmacher by identical 6-2 counts.

In the top flight, Paik fell to Buffington 6-2 in the first and was trailing 4-2 in the second when the match ended.

Niagara Recap

Using an unorthodox lineup, the Yeomen nearly had enough to upset the Purple Raiders as just one match was left unfinished.

The Yeomen and Purples Raiders split the top two doubles flights, leaving it up to the third position to see who would be awarded the team point. Manickam Manickam joined Levi Kimmel at No. 2 where they took down Brent Boleslav and Lukas Wenninge,r 6-3.

Michael Drougas and Camron Cohen fell 6-2 at No. 1 to put the pressure on the third flight. Unfortunately, the team of Stephen Gruppuso and Will Katzman were outlasted, 7-5, by Josh Wilson and Taylan Ozdemir.

Oberlin earned its two points by winning at No. 4 and 5 singles. Senior Paul Farah was blanked 6-0 in the first set against Boleslav, but bounced back in a big way to win the next two sets by the scores of 6-1 and 6-4.

First-year Zachary Vaughn would follow with his first-career collegiate win at No. 5 as he downed Wilson in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

After dropping the first set 6-2, Robert Gittings flipped that same count in his favor in the second set against Ozdemir in the third flight. Unfortunately, the Yeomen junior fell in the decisive third set by a 6-3 count.

At No 2., Kimmel won his first set 6-2, before falling by the same score in the second. His match was left unfinished with him trailing 4-1 in the third against Felipe Fuentes.

Lichtmacher lost by matching 6-1 counts to Francis Nadeau at No. 1, while Matthew Gittings fell in straight sets to Wenninger, 7-6, 6-2 in the sixth position.

The Yeomen will play at the John W. Heisman Field House for the first time this spring when they welcome Division II Tiffin University to town for a 9 a.m. showdown next Saturday.
