Men’s Tennis Tops Carleton in Spring Break Finale

Results

Hilton Head, SC – The Oberlin College men's tennis team capped its spring break schedule by defeating the nights of Carleton College, 7-2, on Thursday, March 24.

"This was a great win and strong way to end our trip," Head Coach Eric Ishida said. "Overall I thought we played well throughout the trip, challenging ourselves against really good competition to prepare us for the stretch run of the season."

All three doubles matches were nip-and-tuck with the Yeomen fortunately finishing on the right side of all three battles to establish themselves early on. In the top bout, Callan Louis and Abraham Davis outlasted Erik Johnson and Jordon O'Kelly 8-6. The pairing of Michael Drougas and Ian Paik gutted out a 9-7 triumph over Christian Nagy and Kevin Mei, while the sweep was complete with Jeremy Lichtmacher and Robert Gittings finishing off Ezra Frankel and Aaron Goodman at No. 3 by an 8-6 count.

With Knights checking in 11th in the region and the Yeomen 12th, it was no surprise that the doubles matches were so close and in singles play four of the six duels went to three sets.

In the top flight Drougas dropped the first set to Mei 6-0, but the Yeomen ace flipped the script by blanking him 6-0 in the second. Drougas used that momentum to cruise to a 10-2 win in the super breaker.

Oberlin fell in the second and third positions, but the back portion of the Yeomen lineup did their job, earning wins in flights four through six.

At No. 4, Davis got by Frankel in three sets, taking the first 6-4 before falling 6-2 in the second. The tiebreak could have easily went to either side, but Davis prevailed 12-10.

Gittings was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Nagy at No. 5, while Billy Lennon and Goodman went the distance at No. 6. Lennon dropped the first set 6-4, but won the second 6-3. He and Goodman went swing-for-swing throughout the tiebreak, but Lennon ultimately secured the win 12-10.

The Yeomen return home with a record of 10-5 and will play host to Denison University on April 2 at 11 a.m.
