Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team will play for its first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon.
Seeded second in the NCAC Tournament, the Yeomen travel to top-seeded Kenyon for a 1 p.m. battle with an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament on the line.
The Yeomen enter with a 15-3-1 record, marking the most wins in a season in program history. The Lords own a 16-2-0 mark and are coming off a 4-1 win over DePauw in the semifinals.
Kenyon, which owns a perfect 7-0 home record at Mavec Field, has outscored its opponents 49-13 on the season. The Lords are also ranked third in the NCAA Regional rankings, while the Yeomen sit in sixth.
In the regular season meeting between the two foes, Kenyon escaped town with a last-second double-overtime victory, prevailing 3-2. Had the even result held, Saturday's championship match would be at Fred Shults Field, as the Yeomen would have earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
On the season, 12 different Yeomen have accounted for 47 goals, which is the second highest in school history as the 1951 squad notched 48. Senior
Nick Wertman has been the top hitman with 16 tallies, which includes the two he posted in the team's 2-1 win over Wabash in the semifinals.
The Yeomen have also posted a new program high in assists as 12 different players have combined to distribute 40 assists on the season. Sophomore
Trenton Bulucea has been the top supplier as he tied Oliver Miller-Farrell with a single-season program high of 11.
The Oberlin seniors have been a part of the most wins of any class in school history with 45 to their credit and they are in search of a return to the NCAA Tournament after getting there as freshmen in 2013.
For The Yeomen to earn their first conference crown, they will need to overcome some recent demons against the Lords as Kenyon boast 10-0-2 mark against Oberlin in the last decade. The last Oberlin win in the series came in 2006 when they prevailed 3-0.
In Oberlin's last two conference tournament appearances (2013, 2015) it was the Lords who eliminated the Yeomen in the semifinals, winning each match 1-0.
