ResultsDelaware, Ohio – Oberlin College track and field closed out day two of the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with four NCAC champions, while senior
Carey Lyons was crowned Women's Distance Runner of the Year for the second time.
Lyons won two events over Friday and Saturday while finishing as a close runner-up in the 1,500. Lyons doubled up on Distance Runner of the Year laurels after receiving the honor at the indoor championships.
As a unit, the Yeowomen finished second (133 pts.) in the team standings, while the Oberlin men tallied 66.5 points, finishing fourth.
Field events began at 10 a.m. and the Yeowomen earned their first individual title of the day shortly after.
Once again first-years
Monique Newton and
Ana Richardson finished one-two, this time in the final of the women's shot put.
Richardson used her final attempt of the morning to register a mark of 40-00.75 (12.21m) for a second place finish and All-NCAC honors.
On her first throw of the finals, Newton not only secured first place, but also shattered the NCAC record by three feet with a toss of 45-07.00 (13.89m). The first place performance is Newton's second of the conference championships.
Three Yeowomen scored points in the women's hammer throw to conclude the weekend's field events. Newton, Richardson and sophomore
Hannah Tyburski all finished in the top eight for eight team points. Tyburski rounded out the Yeowomen with an eighth place finish and a mark of 132-02 (40.29m). Richardson edged out Tyburski, finishing with a throw of 135-08 for seventh.
Newton concluded her record-breaking weekend with a fourth place finish in the hammer. The Sacramento, California native marked a throw of 143-05 (43.72m) to narrowly miss out on a third All-NCAC accolade.
In the men's hammer throw,
Conor Narovec and
Dan Bolotsky tallied vital team points for the Yeomen. Narovec earned Oberlin track and field another All-NCAC accolades with a third place finish while Bolotsky landed in fifth.
On his second attempt, Bolotsky let loose a throw of 155-11 (47.53m). Bolotsky went on to finish eighth in the final of the men's shot put with a mark of 40-01.50. Narovec unloaded a throw of 168-09.6 (51.43m) on his second finals attempt to finish as an All-NCAC performer.
Senior
Evan Finch earned All-NCAC honors with a height of 6-02.5 (1.88m) to tie for third place in the men's high jump.
In her first scored event of the 2015 Championships, first-year
Lilah Drafts-Johnson missed All-NCAC honors by a slim margin. After two consecutive fouls, Drafts-Johnson leaped 35-05.25 (10.80m), finishing fourth.
Drafts-Johnson went on to run in the women's 400-meter hurdles in the afternoon. The Melrose, Massachusetts native clocked a personal best, 1:03.09, to finish second behind a record-breaking performance from Wooster's Hilary Coady.
In the women's 1,500-meter run, Lyons attempted to double up on individual titles following her triumph in the 3,000-meter steeplechase yesterday. Lyons would be out done by Ohio Wesleyan's Abbey Warth and finish second with a time of 4:43.76, but her day was not over.
In her final event of the weekend, Lyons ran to a third All-NCAC performance with a first place finish in the final of the women's 5k.
Lyons jumped out early and ran at the front of the pack first few laps until it was cut to three and eventually two. Lyons battled with OWU's Sarah Fowler until kicking in with 500-meters left to cruise to a comfortable victory. Lyons completed the 12½-lap trek in 18:04.36.
In the men's 5,000-meter,
Geno Arthur ran away with a first place finish. Arthur and Wabash's Billy McManus were side by side for a majority of the event, but Arthur broke free late to dominate the field by over 18 seconds. Arthur claimed one of two individual titles for the Yeomen with a time of 14:56.70.
Arthur's mid-distance counterpart,
Joshua Urso, defeated the field in the men's 800-meter final. Urso got out front in the early and broke away from the field early in lap two. Urso had to fend off a late charge from Denison's Mitchell Keller and Wabash's Fabian House, but did so to win with a time of 1:54.6.
Senior sprinter
Margaret Miller ran a personal best, 12.52 to finish fifth in the women's 100-meter dash. Classmate
Jerry Choi registered a fourth place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.40
The men's and women's 4 x 100-meter relay teams pegged four points each with fifth place finishes.
