Track and Field Pegs Four NCAC Champions on Day One

Results

Delaware, Ohio – Oberlin College track and field registered four individual champions on one day of the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
 
Seniors Carey Lyons, Sarah Jane Kerwin, junior Ave Spencer and first-year Monique Newton all climbed to the top of the conference with their performances on Friday.
 
Spencer kicked off the day with a first-place finish in the women's pole vault final. After hitting her first height, on the first attempt, the Goodyear, Arizona native cleared 10-06.00 (3.20m) on her second attempt. She missed all three attempts at 10-08.00 (3.25m), but held off the field to lock up first.
 
Lyons' performance in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase marked the second NCAC gold of the day. Lyons finished the tiresome journey in 10:51.03, over 11 second faster than the rest of the field and just seconds off of her own NCAC record of 10:49.72.
 
Before Kerwin concluded the day's events in the grueling 10,000-meters, Newton best the field in the finals of the women's discus. Newton coupled with classmate Ana Richardson for a one-two finish and crucial team points for the Yeowomen.On her third finals attempt, Richardson let out a heave of 136-10.75 (41.72m) for a second place finish. Newton used her final attempt of the day to unleash the winning toss of 141-02.10 (43.04m).
 
The final event of day one went to the Yeowomen with Kerwin's commanding victory in the 10,000-meter final. Kerwin beat the field of 16 competitors with a time of 36:26.98 to climb to the top of the podium.
 
Senior Nathan Danko continued the Oberlin field athletes' strong outing on Friday by registering a third-place finish in the final of the men's pole vault. He vaulted to a height of 14-07.25 (4.45m) on his third attempt to secure third and All-NCAC honors.
 
Senior Jerry Choi qualified for the Saturday afternoon final of the men's 400-meter hurdles, qualifying sixth in 56.03. On the women's side, first-year Lilah Drafts-Johnson crossed the finish line with a school record mark of 1:03.71, clocking the fastest qualifying time heading into tomorrow's final.
 
The men earned a top qualifying spot with Joshua Urso's 1:56.11 in the men's 800-meter run, while E.J. Douglas finished fifth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:48.90.
 
Senior Margaret Miller solidified a spot in the finals of the women's 100-meter run with a time of 12.69. Classmate Ashley Parish earned another slot in the finals for the Yeowomen with a time of 25.91 in the 200-meter dash.
 
After Friday's action, the Yeomen are tied in eighth with Kenyon College, while the Yeowomen sit six points ahead of Denison University in second with 49 points.
 
Saturday's action begins with the finals of the women's shot put at 10 a.m.
