ResultsMayfield Village, Ohio – The No. 12 Spartans of Case Western Reserve handed the Oberlin College men's tennis team an 8-1 loss on Sunday afternoon.
"This was good preparation for the upcoming NCAC Tournament," Head Coach
Eric Ishida said. "You get better by playing better teams and I really liked the way we competed today against a top tier team."
The match pitted Drougas brothers Michael, of Oberlin, and Will, of Case Western Reserve up against one another.
Will, who is a senior and ranked ninth in the region, squared off against Oberlin's
Ian Paik in the top singles flight. Paik, who entered ranked 15
th in the region, took the first set 6-3 before dropping the second 6-0. In the decisive third set it was Drougas who prevailed, 6-4.
However, it was Oberlin's Drougas who provided the team's lone point with a victory at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first 6-4, the Yeomen freshman bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second before finishing of Viswajit Simhadri with a 6-2 win in the third.
Callan Louis fell 6-2, 6-4 to Louis Stuerke at No. 3, while
Abraham Davis (6-3, 6-1), and
Soren Zeliger (6-2, 6-1) fell in straight sets at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
At No. 6, first-year
Manickam Manickam fell in three sets to Bas van Lent 6-2, 2-6, 4-6.
In doubles play, the No. 4 ranked pairing of Chris Krimbill and Stuerke topped the 12
th-ranked pairing of Louis and Zeliger by an 8-4 count.
The tightest doubles match, which saw the Drougas brothers on the same court, was won by the No. 2 pairing of the Spartans by a 9-7 count. Case also took the No. 3 battle 8-2.
Oberlin will be back in action this weekend at the NCAC Championship Tournament on the campus on Kenyon College. The Oberlin men will enter as the No. 5 seed.
