Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College men's tennis had a five-match win streak snapped this morning with a loss to the Stevens Institute of Technology, before dropping their afternoon engagement to Cleveland State University.
The nationally ranked Ducks handed Oberlin their first loss in six match with a 7-2 defeat inside the Heisman Field House, Sunday morning.
The Ducks took an early 3-0 lead, after doubles with an, 8-3, 8-6, 8-3, sweep.
In the No. 1 singles match, sophomore
Ian Paik suffered a 6-4, 6-1 defeat, but first-year
Michael Drougas earned his third victory of the weekend, with an identical 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 2 spot.
No. 3 singles went to the Ducks as
Callan Louis dropped a three set, 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 thriller.
Sophomore
Abraham Davis was bested by his Stevens counterpart, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 4 flight, while senior
Soren Zeliger surrendered a 6-2, 6-2 loss in the No. 5 singles bout.
First-year
Manickam Manickam earned the second Oberlin victory of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the No. 6 matchup.
Following the defeat to Stevens, head coach
Eric Ishida and company loaded the vans and departed for their match with the Vikings.
Using Division-I style scoring, the Vikings earned a 6-1 victory at the Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake, Ohio.
Cleveland State swept doubles play with results of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4.
The first singles match of the evening went to the Vikings as Drougas dropped the No. 2 singles flight., 6-1, 6-1. Manickam fell to his CSU counterpart, by an identical score to move put the Yeomen behind, 3-0. The Vikings secured the win with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Louis in the No. 3 singles match.
Sophomore
Billy Lennon fell in the No 6 matchup, 6-3, 6-1, before Davis surrendered the No. 4 bout in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Paik stayed undefeated in singles action with a big, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.
The two losses move the Oberlin men to 7-6 overall.
The Yeomen return to the court when they take on Denison University on Saturday, April 4. The Big Red and Oberlin will begin action at 4:30 p.m. from Granville, Ohio.
