Greater Cleveland Championships |
Kent State Tune Up Berea, Ohio – Oberlin College track and field took on the best in Cleveland at the Greater Cleveland Championships hosted by Baldwin Wallace University. After competition on Friday night, the Yeowomen ran away with first place in the team standings with 169 points, while the men's side placed second with a 140.50-point performance.
The Yeowomen shined against some tough competition from Case Western Reserve, Ursuline College, John Carroll University and host Baldwin Wallace with five first-place performances.
Senior
Margaret Miller won the lightning fast 55-meter dash with a time of 7.59. In the men's 55 meters,
Sam Black ran his way to a second-place finish after clocking the third fastest time in the preliminary heat, 6.84. Black stopped the clock at 6.82 in the finals behind Baldwin Wallace's Benjamin Beidleman. He went on to finish tied for third in the long jump with a mark of 20-05.25 (6.23m).
Fellow sprinter,
Nuria Alishio-Caballero collected a second and third place finish in the 200 and 400-meter dash, respectively. In the 200, Alishio-Caballero clocked a time of 28.48 before finishing the two-lap, 400-meter trek in 1:03.89.
In the 500-meters, first-year standout
Lilah Drafts-Johnson scorched the field with a time of 1:21.36. Classmate
Sarah Urso shaved 10 seconds off of her seedtime to post a time of 5:34.66 in the women's 1-mile. Urso finished second overall against a field of 10 competitors.
Drafts-Johnson went on to double up on first place finishes in the triple jump. She hit a mark of 34-09.00 to best the field.
The Yeowomen showed well in the distance events as per usual with victories in the 3,000 and 5,000-meters. In the 3,000, senior
Carey Lyons demolished the field by over a minute with a record-setting time of 9:55.48. Lyons broke the previous program record set by Joanna Johnson in 2011. First-year
Peyton Boughton finished in second behind Lyons with a time of 11:00.21.
The 5,000-meteres would go to junior
Calista Diehl who finished the grueling expedition in 20:27.09. Sophomore
Alyssa Hemler finished with a time of 20:36.31 for second.
The Yeomen also had an impressive day on the track in distance events.
In the men's 800-meter run, sophomore
Kyle Tribble bested the field with a time of 2:01.61. Three Yeomen swept second through fourth in the 1,000 meters. Benjamin Stassen,
Hannon Ayer, and Garrett Coombs finished with times of 2:43.95, 2:48.31 and 2:52.80 respectively.
The Yeomen also swept third through fifth in the men's 5,000 meters.
Yorito Nakata,
Nick Care and
Diego Cortes registered times of 16:42.84, 17:53.62 and 18:05.83, respectively.
Finally it was all
Robert Moreton in the men's 3,000-meter run as he finished first with a time of 8:54.17.
The Yeowomen 4x200 relay team of first-year
Gwennie Gardiner, Sallaymatu Kallon,
Annie Goodridge and
Rayna Holmes took home a first-place performance with a time of 1:54.68.
A quartet of Oberlin ladies finished third in the women's high jump.
Lisa Carle, Goodridge and Kathrine Skayhan all finished with a height of 4-07.75 (1.42m), leaving them deadlocked with three other competitors.
Goodridge went on to finish second overall in the long jump and triple jump. In the long jump the first-year finished with a mark of 16-02.50 (4.94m) and 34-02.00 (10.41m) in the triple jump.
Sophomore
Ave Spencer finished in a tie for second in the pole vault with a mark of 10-06.00 (3.20m). On the men's side, Nate Danko earned a fourth-place finish by clearing 13-11.25 (4.25m).
Another Yeomen fell into a tie in the high jump. Senior
Evan Finch landed in a tie for second by leaping to a height of 6-00.00 (1.83m).
In the women's shot put, junior
Amethyst Carey finished second overall with a toss of 37-03.00 (11.35m). For the men, it was senior
Conor Narovec and Daniel Bolotsky who finished fourth and fifth in the weight throw. The senior-junior duo finished with marks of 44-02.00 (13.46m) and 43-09.25 (13.43m) respectively.
Kent, Ohio – Junior distance man
Joshua Urso finished 16
th out of a field of 61 competitors at the Kent State Tune-Up Meet. Urso battled top talent from all-NCAA division (I, II and III) as well as other elite runners to finish in the top 20 in the men's 1-mile run.
Urso completed the journey in 4:22.61, nearly hitting the program record mark of 4:21.75 set in 2008.
Thus far, Urso's time is the best mile performance of the year for the Yeomen.
Oberlin track and field will return to action when they travel to Denison University on Friday, February 27.
