Box Score Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's soccer team used a spirited effort to defeat the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers 2-1 on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.
With the victory the Yeomen ran their record 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC. The Tigers fell to 5-4-1 and 0-1 in league play.
With the scored deadlocked at 1-1 an inspired run by
Dan Lev resulted in him earning the game-winning tally.
Nick Wertman gained possession on the near side and then hit a streaking Lev on the left side as he settled and sent a strike into the lower right 90 of the goal.
In the first half, the Yeomen took a 1-0 lead on Wertman's second score of the year as he volleyed home a beautiful corner kick service from
John Ingham in the 17
th minute.
The Yeomen came out with a sense of urgency, understanding the importance of winning the conference opener as they controlled the run of play from the onset. Five minutes before the game's first goal, Inhgam sent a piercing strike from the top of the box that sailed just above the crossbar, and later in the period he had one turned away by the Tigers' keeper.
Other promising chances came courtesy of
Sam Weiss and
Sam Winward. Winward had the better of the two but he was unable to get enough on his left-footed strike to find the back of the cage.
Unfortunately, the momentum shifted later in the stanza as the Tigers mounted a charge and ultimately added the equalizer just before first-half horn as Alexandre Veuthey headed in a cross from Brian Boutin.
In the second half the Yeomen kept up the attacking pressure as their offensive flow was in rhythm for all 90 minutes of the match and they ultimately added the game-winner in the 60
th minute.
Oberlin out-shot Wittenberg 15-3 in the second half -- finishing with a 24-10 edge in total shots -- including a 11-5 edge in shots on goal. The Yeomen also triggered seven corners compared to three for Wittenberg.
The Yeomen defense also played well, fending off a couple of Tiger set-piece threats throughout the night.
Oidie Kuijpers made four saves in his 90 minutes of work in goal.
The Yeomen will conclude their five-match homestand when Baldwin Wallace comes to town on October 1.
