Westlake, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team tested itself against stiff competition, taking on Division I Cleveland State University on Sunday afternoon. The Yeomen fell 7-0 in the match, but scored at least one point in eight of the nine head-to-head battles.
"Challenging ourselves against elite competition is how you get better," second-year Head Coach
Eric Ishida said. "You can certainly take a lot from these types of matches and use what you learned later in the season."
Using the seven-point scoring system, the team that wins at least two of the three doubles matches earns one team point. However, the Vikings swept all three matches by the scores of 8-1, 8-2 and 8-2.
At No. 1 singles sophomore
Callan Louis faced off against junior Matt Kuelker. The Oberlin ace dropped the first set 6-0 before falling 6-3 in the second.
Oberlin's best battles came in the third and fourth flights. At No. 3
Ian Paik and Manuel Bellutti dueled with Bellutti winning the first 6-1. However, Paik challenged him in the second before succumbing 6-4. At No. 4 rookie
Abraham Davis also dropped the first 6-1 before falling 6-4 in the second to Nolan Marks.
Oberlin will now have a two-week break before returning to action on March 8 at home against Ohio Wesleyan University. The first serve is set for 2 p.m.
