Oberlin track and field finished up competition at the Kent State Golden Gala

Newton Sets Record to Conclude Kent State Golden Flash Gala

Kent, Ohio – First year Monique Newton led a portion of the Oberlin College track and field squad with a record-breaking performance to close out the Kent State Golden Gala on Saturday.
 
Newton set a school record in the women's shot put with a toss of 45-08.5 (13.93m) on her second attempt.
 
"It was great for Monique to set the school record in the shot put," said head coach Ray Appenheimer. "Her performance will hopefully be a national qualifying throw."
 
Newton went on to a 22nd place finish in the women's weight throw with a heave of 41-11.50.
 
Fellow first year Caracol Haley finished fourth in the women's 800-meter run in her first collegiate performance. Haley crossed the finish line at 2:25.56.
 
"It was a solid fourth place finish today for Caracol," said Appenheimer.
 
Lilah Drafts-Johnson had a great season opener with a pair of eleventh place finishes against tough Division-I talent. Drafts-Johnson claimed 11th in the women's triple jump with a leap of 33-10.75. She added another 11th place performance as a member of the women's 4 x 400 meter relay.
 
Draft-Johnson joined Margaret Miller, Katherine Skayhan and Nuria Alishio-Caballero to clock a time of 4:22.21.
 
Drafts-Johnson also finished 20th in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.85
 
The Oberlin men had a strong showing on Saturday.
 
Senior Jerry Choi's three-event performance led the way for the Oberlin men. Choi began the day with a 23rd place performance in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.29. Choi followed with two eighth place performances in the 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay. Choi stopped the clock at 51.34 in the men's 400-meter dash before helping the Yeomen to a 3:35.40 finish in the 4 x 400-meter relay.
 
Fellow senior Evan Finch as well as first year Ian Smith set lifetime-bests in the men's first outing of the 2014-15 season.
 
"It was a really good day for both squads," concluded Appenheimer.

Oberlin track and field will take the holiday off to rest and preapre for the bulk of the 2014-15 sheulde in the new year. The Yeomen and Yeowomen return to the track when they host the Dan Kinsey Invitational on Friday, January 9, 2015.
