Box Score Oberlin, Ohio - Two late goals from sophomore
Nick Wertman wasn't enough for Oberlin men's soccer as they dropped a 3-2 double overtime thriller to the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets.
Wertman scored twice on two long crosses in the middle of the Baldwin Wallace defense for his third and fourth goals of the season. Senior
Dylan Tencic earned the assist on the first goal, while a brilliant pass from fellow sophomore
Sam Weiss helped Wertman register his fourth of the year.
The first half was a back and forth tussle between the two sides. Senior goalkeeper
Oidie Kuijpers only faced one shot on goal in the first on his way to a two save performance.
In the 16th minute, senior leading-scorer,
John Ingham nearly laid claim to his sixth goal of the year. Ingham dribbled past the Baldwin Wallace defense a rifled a shot on goal, but the Yellow Jacket keeper made a diving stop.
With five minutes left in the first stanza, Ingham almost found the go-ahead goal once more when the Yeomen were awarded a free kick from a BW foul. The Yellow Jacket's keeper tried to corral the set piece when it traveled into the box but could not, leaving the ball loose in the BW penalty area. Ingham got a foot to it once more, but the Yellow Jacket keeper made another athletic save to keep the match scoreless heading into the half.
Wertman put the Yeomen ahead, 1-0, when he settled a cross in from Tencic and took a one-touch lob shot that floated over the Baldwin Wallace keeper's reach.
The Jackets found the equalizer in the 84th minute and stunned the Yeomen with a go-ahead goal four minutes later to move in front 2-1.
Wertman doubled up on his scoring total with a brilliant tally in the final minute of the contest. His second was nearly a carbon copy of the first after he received a cross from Weiss in the box, settled it off of his chest and tapped it into the twine. The goal forced the first extra time contest of the year for the Yeomen.
The first overtime period passed by with Oberlin taking four shots, none of which hit their mark.
At the 100:28 mark in the second extra time period, Baldwin Wallace's Aaron Harden claimed his second goal of the night for the Jackets to put the match away.
The loss moves the Oberlin men back to .500 at 4-4-0 overall. With their victory over Wittenberg last Saturday, the Yeomen sit at 1-0-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference as they continue conference play on Sunday.
Oberlin men's soccer will travel to Crawfordsville, Indiana on Sunday, October 5, to take on the Wabash College Little Giants in NCAC competition. First touch between the Yeomen and Little Giants is slated for 1 p.m.
