Box Score vs. Concorida (Wis.)
Hilton Head, S.C. – It was a tale of two different matches for the Oberlin College men's tennis team on Friday as the Yeomen dropped a morning tilt to Colby College, 8-1, but bounced back to win an afternoon match against Concordia (Wis.) by the same 8-1 score line on Friday at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
Oberlin simply dominant against the Falcons, winning all six singles matches as well as the top two doubles contests.
Recently inserted into the No. 1 position, rookie
Callan Louis was able to outlast Russell Johnson in three sets. He took the first 7-6 and 7-3 in the tiebreak. After a hiccup in the second that saw him get shutout 6-0, Louis regrouped to win the super-breaker 11-9. It was the only three-set showdown of the match.
Charlie Marks continued his tremendous season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Skip Turner at No. 2, while senior
Ben Turchin took down Taylor Shaffer 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.
Sophomore standout
Soren Zeliger was unchallenged at No. 4 as he made short work of Antonie Leon with a pair of 6-1 wins.
Eliot Heaton and
Brandon McKenna also won at five and six, respectively.
In doubles play Louis and Marks cruised past Turner and Shaffer 8-1, and Turchin and Zeliger took care of Johnson and Leon 8-3. Head Coach
Eric Ishida elected to give the rookie pairing of
Parker Oka-Wong and
Paul Goebel a start No. 3, but they were edged out 8-6 by Garrett Wells and Steve Fritz.
“I was really happy with the way the guys responded after a tough match in the morning,” Coach Ishida said. “It was a great way to end the trip on a high note and something for us to build upon as we enter the back stretch of the season.”
Against the Mules, Louis secured the lone Yeomen point by dispatching Jason Ottomano 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Zeliger had a close match at No. 4, forcing a tiebreak in the second set, but he was ultimately upended by Matt Carroll 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
Marks and Louis also pushed Luke Martin and Ottomano to the brink at No. 1 doubles, but unfortunately they found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-8 (7-2) setback.
“We played very strong at No. 1 doubles and singles, but they are a very talented team with a lot of depth,” Ishida said. “It was a good match for us to prepare for conference as we are continuing to raise our level play.”
The Yeomen return home to Oberlin to play host to NCAC East opponent Wooster on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
