Box Score

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team secured its first North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament berth since 2006, defeating the Allegheny College Gators 3-1 on Wednesday night at Fred Shults field.

With the win Oberlin tied the single-season school record for victories in a season, entering Saturday's regular-season finale at Kenyon with an overall mark of 13-2-3. The wins total matches that of the 1988 Yeomen squad that finished 13-3-1.

Even more important than the 13 wins, Oberlin improved to 5-1-2 in the NCAC and its 17 total points are good for one of the four spots in the conference tournament. Saturday's match-up with the Lords will determine seeding for the tournament, which begins on Wednesday, November 6.

"It feels great to be back into the tournament," Head Coach Blake New said. "Our group worked extremely hard all season long and I am glad to see they were rewarded for their efforts, especially after being so close in recent years. With that being said I thought we were effective tonight, but it wasn't our best performance. Allegheny was a good team and certainty proved that we still have a lot of work to do to keep this thing going in the right direction."

The Gators nearly struck first just seven minutes in, but Brandt Rentel got just enough of Brian Graham's shot to force it off the post.

The Yeomen would be the ones to get on the board first in the 14th minute when John Ingham deposited his first of two goals on the night. He was setup on the play by Joe Graybeal as the pair worked a give-and-go along the far side. (Watch)

Five minutes later Graybeal continued his distributing ways with a beautiful back-heel flip, setting up freshman Adam Chazin-Gray for a piercing strike from 15-yards out to make it 2-0. It was the rookie's third goal of the season. Ari Schwartz also assisted on the play. (Watch)

However, Allegheny would cut the Yeomen lead in half when Paul Teufel dribbled through two Yeomen defenders and sent a hard left-footed strike into the upper right-90 of the goal to make it a 2-1 game at the intermission.

In the second half both teams fought for possession with Allegheny holding a 6-5 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes of play.

However, the Yeomen would finally put the game away for good with just over a minute left, as Ingham would net his conference-leading 15th goal of the season. A Gators' miscue in their defensive third was recovered on the near wing by Dan Lev, who sent a service into the box to a streaking Ingham. Nick Wertman also assisted on the play. (Watch) Ingham is now tied with Tony Osei for third on the all-time single-season goals list. Osei netted 15 scores in both 1976 and 1977. He also has the best season in school history with 20 goals in 1975.

Prior to the game Oberlin honored seniors Ari Schwartz, Brandt Rentel, Evan Tincknell, Matt Tunzi, Joe Graybeal, Aidan Apel and Graham McQueen.

Rentel played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves to run his total to 58 on the season.

The winner of Saturday's game at Kenyon will determine the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Lords defeated Wittenberg 6-1 tonight to improve to 6-0-2 in the conference with 20 points. A Yeomen victory would give them 20 points and the No. 2 seed. Fans can follow all of the action courtesy of Kenyon's live video feed here. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
