Oberlin, Ohio- The Oberlin College men's soccer team won its second game of the year as it defeated Heidelberg University 4-2 on Sunday night at Fred Shults Field. The win was a milestone for Yeomen head coach
Blake New, marking his 100th victory in the program.
Oberlin got out to a quick start as they found the back of the net twice in the opening nine minutes of the first half. The first goal came from sophomore
Sam Winward, assisted by freshman
John Ingham. Less than four minutes later, junior
Evan Tincknell scored his first career goal from the right side of the box thanks to an assist from freshman
Slade Gottlieb.
Heidelberg would go on to score its first goal of the game five minutes into the second half off the foot of Christopher Koczak. The Student Princes evened the score 2-2 in the 75th minute when Erik Furst scored off of service from Miguel Grande.
The Yeomen had a second surge when senior
Ed Vitoria put in his second header of the season off of a corner kick from senior
Chris Campbell to put them up by one. Two minutes later, sophomore
Remi Schneider and senior
Justin Griffiths earned assists after a free kick from Schneider was headed from Griffiths to Campbell, who buried it in the back of the net.
The Oberlin defense kept the two-goal lead for the remaining eight minutes of regulation, securing the victory. Junior goalkeeper
Brandt Rentel finished with five saves.
Oberlin dominated the tempo for the majority of the game and led in corner kicks with nine to Heidelberg's one. The Student Princes fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Yeomen will continue their home stretch when they take on visiting Baldwin Wallace on September 4 at 5 p.m.
