Richmond, IN – The Oberlin College men's soccer team played away from their home pitch for the first time this season and were able to gut-out a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Earlham College on Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the two teams who were longtime conference rivals in the North Coast combined to score five times over the final 45 minutes of play.
"We got off to a slow start tonight,” Head Coach
Blake New said. “However, with that being said we showed a lot of resiliency and were able to grind out a win. It took us some time to get used to the playing conditions and pressure of our first road match but we were able to adjust for the second half and get out of here top.”
The game was tied at two late in the second half, but it was senior
Andrew Wise who came through with his second goal in as many games in the 77th minute to send the Yeomen home as winners. He was assisted on the play by
Sam Winward.
The Quakers tried to add the equalizer late and force extra time, but a pair of
Brandt Rentel saves in the final five minutes helped the Yeomen preserve the win. The junior keeper finished with just three stops on the night.
Rookie
Slade Gottlieb cashed in his third goal of the season 54:13 into the game, but Earlham would quickly even things back up at one apiece just 44 seconds later.
The Quakers would go up 2-1 in the 64th minute thanks to a defensive miscue by the Yeomen. However in the 72nd minute
Joe Graybeal tied the game with an assist coming from
Matt Tunzi.
It was a nip-and-tuck battle throughout with Quakers finishing with a slight 9-7 edge in shots, with both teams finishing with five shots on goal. OC also had a 6-5 edge in corners.
With the win, the Yeomen ran their record to 5-1 on the year. It is the first time an OC soccer squad has started the season at 5-1 since 1988, a year in which the team finished 13-3-1.
The Yeomen return home on Saturday night to play host to local rival Case Western Reserve at 7 p.m.
