Erie, Pa. - The Oberlin College men's tennis team dropped their final North Coast Athletic Conference match today in a very closely contested 6-3 match with Allegheny College to conclude the regular season.
In doubles play Oberlin earned a win in the second position when
Logan Chun and
Ben Turchin defeated Charlie Murphy and Frank Mosconi 8-5. The Gators' Daniel Conroy and Alex Hurtuk were three points better than
Sam Towne and
Joe Leffler at No. 3 doubles in the tiebreaker otherwise the Yeomen would have taken a 2-1 lead into singles action.
"Today we were just a point here or there away from winning this match 6-3. It's a little frustrating to end the regular season this way but we will use the week to get ready for the NCAC Championships. Logan had a good win and Charlie played well today as well," said head coach Adam Shoemaker.
The Yeomen earned wins in the top two spots during singles. Chun and Patrick Cole, ranked 14th, were about as evenly matched as two opponents could be. Oberlin's ace took the first set 7-5 and prevailed in the second with a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak win for his first win over a ranked opponent.
Marks also won in straight sets defeating Hurtuk 6-2, 6-4. Allegheny picked up a couple of pivotal points in the middle of the line up.
Soren Zeliger bounced back to win the second set against Murphy but dropped the third to fall at No. 3 singles.
Turchin was up a set winning 7-5 over Sam Stephenson and then dropped two tough 6-4 sets to the Gators' No. 4.
Oberlin (10-12, 2-2 NCAC East) returns to the court next weekend in Gambier, Ohio at the NCAC Championships hosted by Kenyon College.
