Oberlin, Ohio - Forcasted rain and wet courts forced day two of the NCAC-MIAA Challenge indoors to the confines of John W. Heisman Field House today. The Knights of Calvin College defeated Oberlin this morning 5-1.
The Yeomen nearly escaped doubles action with a 2-1 lead but Calvin earned a 9-8 (9-7) win at No. 3 to take the early lead and momentum into singles. Earlier in doubles the Knights' Preston Phillips and partner Philip Reinken were 8-2 winners of
Charlie Marks and
Soren Zeliger in the top spot.
Oberlin's second pairing of
Ben Turchin and
Logan Chun picked up a win downing Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson 8-5, evening the match at one all.
Again it was the Oberlin seniors who looked like they would pull off another come from behind win at third doubles.
Joe Leffler and
Sam Towne fell a bit short in their comeback effort with Calvin's Jarrod Brower and Vashan Wright earning the win in the tiebreaker.
Needing just three points from singles play the Knights turned in good performances in the middle of the line up to defeat their Yeomen opposition.
A physically drained Marks, who had two lengthy matches yesterday, dropped his match at No. 2 singles to a very solid performance from Phillips, 6-0, 6-2.
Peterson picked up Calvin's fourth point winning 6-2, 6-4 over Turchin in the fourth position.
Oberlin looked to have life as Towne and Leffler were each up a set, Chun was playing in a second set tiebreaker and Zeliger used a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set to provide a spark of hope. However, Reinken turned in a 6-3 third set win defeating Zeliger and ending the Oberlin run.
"This was a great weekend for the team. We played good tennis in every match, got some good individual results and competed to the end. Today, Calvin was good, they played very well in doubles and all the matches were close; if this had been played out to the end I think we would have had a good shot at winning the match," commented head coach Adam Shoemaker.
Oberlin (10-10, 2-0 NCAC East) is back in action Monday, April 16th when Kenyon College, ranked 4th nationally, visits for a for an NCAC showdown.
