Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team earned two wins during the first day of competition of the North Coast Athletic Conference - Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Challenge defeating Albion College 8-1 and Alma College 7-2.
Oberlin took a commanding lead and all the momentum in the first match sweeping doubles. The Yeomen's No.1 pairing of
Charlie Marks and
Soren Zeliger were perfectly synced as they breezed past Tucker Blake and David Richter 8-2.
The second doubles partnership of
Ben Turchin and
Logan Chun worked a bit harder for their win but came away 8-6 winners of Albion's Billy Sessions and Danny Frank.
The highlight of play came at third doubles were senior co-captins
Joe Leffler and
Sam Towne found themselves staring at defeat with the score 7-4 in favor of the Britons. The Yeomen duo rattled off three games to even the match at seven each, they again had to rally to even the score at eight all then they crushed Steven Nawrocki and Brandon Kosinski 7-2 in the tiebreaker to keep Oberlin perfect through doubles action.
In singles play Oberlin continued their fine play and looked confident up and down the line up. Chun picked up another win in the top spot defeating Frank 6-2, 6-3.
In the fifth and sixth spots Towne and Leffler grabbed wins defeating their Briton opponents 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively.
At No. 4 Turchin turned in a fine performance winning 6-4, 6-2. In the third position Zeliger found himself down a set after dropping a tighly contested first set losing 7-5. He responded with a 7-5 win in the second set and then went extra games in the superbreaker winning 11-9 securing the match.
The Britons lone win came in the second spot, Richter was 6-2 first set winner of the Marks, a solid comback effort in the second set fell just short as never quite got a hold of the match dropping a 7-5 decision.
Oberlin earned their tenth win of the season in their afternoon match, marking double digit wins for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
The Yeomen jumped out in front early sweeping double action again. Marks and Zeliger were 8-2 winners in the top spot defeating Alma's Logan Beard and Trent Pontious.
Alma put up more resistance in at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles but the Yeomen pairings prevailed each winning 8-6.
Zeliger started things off right for Oberlin in singles action as he defeated Pontious 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. The Scots picked up a win at No. 4 just before Towne and Leffler concluded their matches at five and six. Leffler was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Mark Stuart and Towne defeated Gordon Rumschlaug 6-1, 6-3.
In the top spot Chun earned a 6-1 first set win then had to grind out the second set 7-6 (7-2) defeating Josh Gove in straight sets.
Marks, Oberlin's No. 2, again found himself in a really even match. He led 5-2 in the first set but could not sustain the effort as Beard came roaring back to take the set 7-5. In the second set there was a bit more back and forth between the two but with the score at 5-5 the Scots' second hitter put away the final two games earning another 7-5 win.
Oberlin (10-9, 2-1 NCAC East) is back in action tomorrow as the NCAC-MIAA Challenge continues. The Yeomen square off against Calvin College at 9 a.m. The NCAC won seven of the eight matches contested today.
