Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College Delta Lodge Director of Athletics & Physical Education William Roth has appointed
Anna Baeth to be the new head coach of the school's field hockey program.
Baeth, a graduate of Swarthmore College, comes to Oberlin from Mount Holyoke College where she has spent the past two seasons as the team's assistant coach. Baeth's main responsibilities were to coach the Lyons' defense and goalies. Additionally, she developed an in-and-out of season workout program for the team.
In her two years on staff, the Lyons won a total of 27 games. This past fall the team finished at 16-5 overall and won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship Tournament. Furthermore, Baeth's tireless efforts helped the Lyons win the New England's Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title for the first time since 2001 and reach the NEWMAC Tournament Championship Game for the first time since 2003. Her defensive unit allowed just 27 goals in 21 games and senior goalie Katie Gibson finished second in the conference with an outstanding 1.26 goals against average.
“I am thrilled to be joining the field hockey family, as well as an amazing group of passionate coaches and administrators at Oberlin,” Baeth said. “I would like to thank Associate Director of Athletics,
Natalie Winkelfoos, and Delta Lodge Director of Athletics, William Roth, for this opportunity, and for their tireless pursuit of success for Oberlin's student-athletes and coaches alike.”
“Oberlin's is truly a special place that has a world renown reputation. I am excited to come here to see all of the wonderful things Oberlin has to offer its student-athletes and build a great tradition within the field hockey program.”
In addition to her responsibilities with the Lyons, Baeth was con-currently working as the assistant women's lacrosse coach at Elms College and Mount Holyoke, and as the head coach for a national U14 Club Field Hockey Team at Indoor Action Sports.
Prior to her arrival at Mount Holyoke, she was an assistant field hockey coach at Smith College for the 2009-10 school year. While there she oversaw the team's fundraising and recruiting, while briefly serving as acting head coach.
“I am extremely pleased to welcome
Anna Baeth to the Oberlin College community and the athletic coaching staff,” Roth said. “Coach Baeth possesses a superior knowledge of her sport coupled with a personal integrity and passion to teach that makes me extremely optimistic that she will lead a quick resurgence of Oberlin's field hockey program. Anna has a focused approach and a winning mentality. Her dedication to individual and team excellence distinguished her in our search process and Oberlin Athletics and the field hockey team will see dramatic competitive improvement because of Coach Baeth. I am confident that the women who will play for her will become stronger players and dynamic people as a result of her leadership.”
During her time at Swarthmore College, she played both field hockey and lacrosse. A two-time All-Centennial All-Conference selection in field hockey, Baeth was named team captain for her senior season.
Baeth, who recently earned a master's degree in exercise and sport studies from Smith College, will officially begin her duties with Oberlin on May 1.
