Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis squad could not defend their home courts in non-conferance action against nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University and a strong Hope College team.

In the early morning match Oberlin battled with Hope but unfortunately came out on the wrong side of a 5-4 decision.

The Yeomen could not find the answer in doubles play against the Flying Dutch in the top spot or at No. 3.  However, at No. 2, Ben Turchin and Logan Chun were the right combination to defeat Parker Bussies and Matthew Culver 8-5.

In singles action the Chun put in a solid first set effort against Hope's Robert Cawood but eventually fell in the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) then found it difficult going in the second falling 6-0.

Oberlin picked up a win in the second singles spot with Charlie Marks coming from behind after dropping the first set.  Marks defeated Bussies 6-4, 6-4 in the second and third sets to pick up his fourth win of the early season.

Senior Sam Towne was an easy winner over Davis Vanderveen winning in straight set 6-1, 6-4.

Soren Zeliger, a first-year, defeated the Flying Dutch's Grant Shooter 6-4, 6-4.

"We played hard but the guys will have to do better early in matches to set the tone.  Doubles points today could have turned the Hope match in our favor.  They are good, strong opponent and they got the wins at the right time today," commented head coach Adam Shoemaker.

In the afternoon match Oberlin challenged Cleveland rival Case Western.  Case, ranked 17th nationally, managed to set the Yeomen back 9-0.

"We had a long stretch of tough matches, fatigue has set in a bit so we glad that we get to back off a little this next week.  We will get in some good work, implement a couple of changes and be ready to face Grove City," said Shoemaker following the days contests.

Oberlin (4-6) will have a weeks break before returning to competitive match play.  The Yeomen host Grove City College on March 10th with an 11 a.m. start.
