Oberlin, Ohio- The Oberlin College baseball team lost a close fought game to the visiting Bluffton University Beavers Wednesday afternoon. The final score of the game was 5-4.
Oberlin was lead by sophomore catcher
Steve DiNanno. He was the only Yeoman with multiple hits, going 3-for-4 on the day with a double and a RBI.
Sean Cohen added a double, while
Mike McDonald and
Eric Knight both added RBI's and singles.
Senior
Jason James got the start on the mound, and scattered seven hits over five and a third innings. He gave up 3 runs, and left the game with the score tied at 3-3.
The Yeomen jumped on the score board first in the bottom of the second inning when Dinanno singled and scored
Zach Kisley from second. Kisley reached base on a fielders choice.
Bluffton would answer with a run in the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, the Yeomen would once again score, as they plated two.
Robin Witjes got things started with a single to right field. Cohen would then lace an opposite field double. The Yeomen would have two consecutive groundouts that would score both Witjes and Cohen.
Knight came in to pitch with one out in the sixth, with runners on first and third. He would work out of the jam, but not before Bluffton would tie the score with a groundout.
Bluffton took the lead again in the seventh inning, by a score of 4-3. In the bottom half of the frame, Oberlin answered with a run of their own.
Kevin Verne started the inning off with an infield single, and Witjes would get on first with a fielders choice to third, but an error by the third baseman would see Verne safe at second. The Yeomen then performed a double steal, and during the next at bat, Verne scored on a wild pitch.
Bluffton took the lead for the final time in the top of the ninth, as Knight gave up a single to lead off the inning. After a sac bunt and a hit by pitch, Knight would get Bluffton's Nick Broyles to fly out to left field. After an intentional walk, Knight would battle with the next Beaver batter, but ended up walking in the go ahead run.
The Yeomen tried to rally in the ninth, as Verne would wear a pitch to get on first, and Cohen would walk after falling behind 0-2 on the count. However, the Yeomen were not able to plate either runner, and the game ended with a score of 5-4.
Oberlin will travel to Avon, Ohio this weekend to play D'Youville in a four game set at All Pro Freight Stadium. Both days are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
