Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team won their opening match in North Coast Athletic Conference play this morning defeating Ohio Wesleyan University 7-2 but struggled to find their way against non-conference foe Baldwin-Wallace College losing in the nightcap 7-2.
In the morning match the Yeomen nearly swept doubles action, winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots and losing by a slim margin in the tiebreak in the top position.
Seniors
Joe Leffler and
Sam Towne were first off the court at No. 3 doubles after besting John Russell and Ryan Leslie 8-2.
Oberlin's second pairing of
Ben Turchin and
Logan Chun also finished off their Bishop counterparts 8-2.
Charlie Marks and first-year
Soren Zeliger competed to the end but dropped the match in the tiebreaker to Ohio Wesleyan's John Rissell and Richie Karban 9-8 (7-3).
"This was a great win for the guys, a good way to start the day and conference play. they played hard, dictated matches and made OWU react to our play on every court. A great way to celebrate parents' day," commented head coach Adam Shoemaker.
In singles action Zeliger hitting at No. 4 made quick work of his opponent downing Russell 6-2, 6-1.
In the second spot Marks and OWU's Karban battled through two tough sets with the Yeomen sophomore getting the better in each earning 6-4, 6-4 wins, stretching to a two match winning streak.
At the fifth spot Towne cruised to a 6-2 first set win over Rissell and then lead 4-1 in the second before the Bishop hitter retired from the match.
Leffler extended his streak to seven matches and remains umblemished on the season with his 6-0, 6-0 win over Conor Breen at No. 6 singles.
In the top spot Chun and Thieman were the only two competitors to go three sets. Down a set after dropping the first 6-3 Chun battled back taking the second set 6-4 and then the third by the same score.
Ohio Wesleyan picked up their lone singles win at No. 3 where Leslie out battled Turchin 6-3 in the first set and held on in the second, 7-5.
Baldwin-Wallace improved to 8-0 with their win over the Yeomen this evening. Oberlin earned wins at No. 3 doubles were seniors Leffler and Towne continue to play solid, consistant tennis defeating Kyle Patterson and Taylor Long 8-3.
"Our seniors are leading the way for this team in both effort and outcomes. The scores against B-W won't reflect how hard the guys competed in this second match of the day against a good team," said Shoemaker.
Oberlin's lone singles win also came from the racquet of Leffler as he was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Long at No. 6.
The Yeomen's second doubles pairing of Turchin and Chun put in a good performance before falling to the Yellow Jacket duo 8-6.
Zeliger and Tyler Beaton went into a super tiebreaker to determine the outcome at No. 5 singles. After taking the first set Zeliger surrendered the second and took Beaton to extra points but fell short at 12-10 in the breaker.
Oberlin (3-4, 1-0 NCAC) is back in action February 29th when they travel to Mount Union for non-conference match slated for 6:30 p.m.
