Box Score
Oberlin, Ohio – An inspired effort by the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team wasn't enough to secure a win as the visiting Washington & Jefferson University Presidents outlasted the Yeowomen 12-6 on Thursday evening at Fred Shults Field.
The dynamic first-year duo of
Grace Amber and
Molly Bloom led the Yeowomen with two goals each, while fellow rookies
Ilyssa Meyer and
Zoe Zetlin contributed with one score of their own.
The Presidents (9-3) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead until Bloom put Oberlin on the board with 13:35 remaining in the first half on a free-position goal.
Back-to-back scores in a 30-second time span by Meyer and Amber got the Yeowomen within 7-4 with just over five minutes left in the opening period, but W&J would net two more goals before the first half horn would sound to lead 9-4 at the break.
Both teams tightened up defensively in the second half as the scoring slowed down on both sides and the Yeowomen ran out of time before they could mount a comeback attempt.
Presidents' goalie Julia McLellan had a great night in the cage as she turned away 10 OC shots in the first half.
Oberlin (3-8) was out-shot 31-23, but did win the groundball battle 23-21. Draw controls were also even at 10 apiece.
The Yewomen will have a quick turnaround as they play host to conference foe Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at high noon.
