Oberlin, Ohio – In their final game of the year, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team celebrated their nine seniors on Saturday evening. Hosting Ohio Wesleyan for the contest, the Yeowomen fell 15-10 and finish the season 10-7 and 1-6 in conference play.
Making history in her final game on Bailey,
Megan Hiller dished out a trio of assists to break the single season assist record, set by Hayley Drapkin '19 in 2018. Hiller's 41 assists surpass Drapkin's 39. The senior finishes with 76 assists 207 points, both of which rank as second-all time. Her 131 career goals rank third all-time in program history.
Leading the goal-scoring action,
Kylie Thompson tallied five on the day, bringing her season total to 55.
Mary Rodman added a pair of scores, while seniors
Lauren Deardorf and
Olivia Corradi also chimed in with a goal apiece.
On the draw, senior
Maddie Weathers led the team with four draw controls, followed by classmate
Katie McMorris with two and
Rachel Reiter with two. Reiter anchored the defense with a pair of caused turnovers and two ground balls. In the midfield,
Maddie Darlington brought in another pair of ground balls.
In goal, senior
Janny McCormick earned the start, making seven saves in 30 minutes.
Emily Berger came in for second half relief, making six saves and grabbing a pair of ground balls.
After Ohio Wesleyan scored the opening goal, Corradi earned a free position opportunity to tie the game. Scoring off the line, Corradi gave the Yeowomen their first point of the day. At the 7:05 mark, Oberlin earned the first extra player opportunity of the game. With another free position coming on the tails of the penalty, Thompson tallied the FPO to cut the game to 4-2.
Down 7-2 at the start of the second quarter, the Crimson and Gold caught wind with three-straight goals from Thompson, all assists by Hiller. The first tied the single season record for the senior, the second, which came off a draw control from McMorris, gave Hiller sole ownership of the historic record. Rodman added one more goal off the 8-mtr mark to cut the Battling Bishops' lead to one. Before the halftime break, OWU scored another goal to take an 8-6 lead.
Coming out of the locker rooms, the visitors added another three goals, broken up by a Rodman free-position; her second of the day. Despite another set of unanswered goals for OWU, Oberlin battled back to bring the game to 12-9. The Battling Bishops continued to pull away through the final frame of play, but in the final seconds of the game, Deardorf picked up the loose ball from Corradi's shot of goal, and dished it back into the net for the final goal of the game.
Oberlin finishes a historic season, marking the first year the team has had a winning season and claimed ten wins since 2018. Additionally, the Yeowomen saw several players break single-game and single-season records, including Hiller and Thompson. With their 20-0 win over Alma in March, Oberlin secured their first shutout victory since 2013.
While the Crimson and Gold graduate eight seniors, they return a roster filled with depth and promise, and look ahead to the 2027 season.
