Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis squad suffered an 8-1 setback today as they were defeated by the Yellow Jackets of Balwin-Wallace College in the first outdoor match of the spring.
The Yeomen who are still not at full strength would drop all three doubles matches with a shuffled lineup.
Peder Davis and
Eliot Heaton paired up in the top spot and challenged B-W's Andy Redd and Matt Lachman before falling 8-3.
Ben Godlove returned to the Oberlin lineup today and partnered with
Sergio Sanchez in the third slot, they were bested by Joe Horvath and Tyler Beaton 8-2.
In singles action B-W (10-1) would have their way in many of the matches.
Sam Towne hitting in the No. 3 position would take a couple of games from Lachman in each set but eventually dropped the match 6-3, 6-2.
The Yeomen No. 2,
Joe Leffler, was the lone bight spot. He defeated Redd by winning the super tiebreak. Leffler was in a tight first set but was unable to find any winning shots, dropping the first set 6-1. Swinging away in the second set he produced a 6-4 win and battled to a 10-7 decision in the tiebreak for Oberlin's only win.
“We are hoping to get healthy in this next week in preparation for our spring break trip. Those matches should help to prepare us for the tough NCAC schedule,” said head coach Adam Shoemaker, “Joe was tough today, he was in the first set but just couldn't catch a break. He dug deep to get the second set and the tiebreak. This was a good win for him.”
The Yeomen are off until they meet Cornell College (IA) in Hilton Head, S. C. on March 28th during their annual spring break trip which includes four matches.
