Cleveland, OH - The Yeomen and Yeowomen emerged victorious in their dual meets this evening against John Carroll University. The women won their side of the meet by a score of 145.5-77.5 while the men won 129-108.
The Yeowomen started off strong in the mile with seniors
Jenny Meltz and
Kelsey Sherman. Meltz took first place (18:58.53) with Sherman following close behind in second (19:05.95). The duo also went 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle. Meltz won the event with a time of 5:41.53 and Sherman swam to a second place finish (5:44.88) edging out a JCU swimmer at the finish.
Seniors
Sara Kadi and
Jordan Jancosek also tallied up victories for the Yeowomen in their individual events. Kadi won the 400-yard individual medley (4:51.47) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.40). Jancosek won the 50-yard freestyle (25.95). She also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (57.23).
Junior
Kate Melanson just missed out on winning the 200-yard freestyle. She was closing on a JCU swimmer in the final yards of the race, but ran out of room. She turned in a time of 2:01.92 in the event. She later won the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.98) with fellow junior teammate
Jane McIntyre following close behind in second (1:03.94).
The Yeowomen ended the meet on a strong note by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of
Annika Stridh, Jancosek,
Lesley Whitaker and
Katie Dunn won the event with a time of 1:44.93.
On the men's side the meet was close thoughout the evening. The Yeomen needed every point necessary to defeat JCU. The team received solid performances across the board from each swimmer.
The team started off on the right foot by winning 200-yard medley .
Dylan Jordan,
Mike Sabatka,
Corey Spiro and
Jon Vimr won the event with a time of 1:43.26.
First-year standout
Chris Pickens led the way for the Yeomen. Pickens won three events on the evening. In the 200-yard freestyle he won in exciting fashion by coming back to win the race in the final 25 yards with a finishing time of 1:48.57 as he outtouced a JCU swimmer by .09 seconds. Pickens also went on to win the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.68) and 100-yard breastroke (1:06.26).
Corey Spiro and
Dylan Jordan each won an individual event. Spiro won the 400-yard individual medley (4:36.95) and Jordan won the 100-yard backstroke (56.30).
The divers also played an important role on both sides. Senior
Christine Martin won one and three-meter for the Yeowomen.
Jordan Attwood and
Rhys Hertafeld went 1-2 on both one and three-meter this evening.
"We had a great team effort this evening," said Head Coach Mark Fino. "There were great swims across the board. I am very proud of how we raced this evening. We are looking forward to another great meet tomorrow."
Both teams will compete at 2pm tomorrow at Case Western. The women will face NCAC rival Wooster while the men will go up against Case Western.
