Oberlin, Ohio – At the precipice of a winter storm, the Oberlin College swim and dive teams hosted new North Coast rival John Carroll (Men No. 24, Women No. 46) on Friday night. Dealing with a slew of the seasonal sickness, Oberlin's men's team finished 157-66, while the women finished 172-45 against the national foes.
In the relays, Oberlin men's 200-yard medley team of
James Moll,
Charles Matia,
Leo Powers, and
Zach Black sprinted to a 1:35.91 finish for second place. The 200-yard free relay team of
Chahine Saïd,
Kye Marrero,
Miguel Siwady, and Moll also took silver with a time of 1:30.14.
On the women's side of the team event, the 200-yard medley team of
Yasmeen Boulakandal,
Yoo Soomin,
Kaylee Johnson, and
Gretchen Lotter notched a pair of points behind a 2:00.34 finish. In the 200-yard free relay,
Maya Edwards,
Kendall McKelvey,
Addie Malley, and
Nyrobi Whitfield swam to third in a time of 1:46.08.
Katherine Noller kicked off the individual events with a silver finish in the 1,650-yard free race. Her time of 19:34.20 was among just two swimmers who finished sub-20 minutes. Teammate
Tripp Hawkins followed the rookie with a 20:43.89. On the men's side, Siwady notched 16:36.84 to grab second. In fourth was Saïd with a time of 17:09.79.
Malley earned second in the 200-yard free, touching the pads at 2:08.30, which sits as a personal best. In his return to the pool,
Tyler Wang grabbed fifth overall with a time of 1:51.41 on the men's side of the event.
In the free sprints, Whitfield led the Crimson and Gold with a time of 25.84. Black (22.09) and Moll (22.48) went second-third on the men's side. For Moll, 22.48 marks a career-best for the junior.
Soomin continued the pace for the Yeowomen, grabbing second in the 200-yard breast in 2:33.27. Johnson (2:21.94) and McKelvey (2:26.66) finished second and third in the 200-yard fly. Powers earned third in the same event, clocking a time of 1:59.15.
Just ahead of the 3-mtr diving break, Saïd (2:02.82) grabbed third in the 200-yard back, and Lotter (5:40.82) earned third in the 500-yard free.
Yuan Wang led the team in the dive, scoring 120.60 points to finish first overall and grab nine points for the Yeomen.
The Crimson and Gold waste no time returning to competition, hitting the road merely 12 hours later to take on another national contender in Case Western Reserve (Men No. 15, Women No. 24). The first horn goes off at 12 p.m. tomorrow, January 24.
