Meadville, Pa. – Brian Graham scored his first goal of the season with less than a minute to play in double overtime to give his Allegheny College Gators a 3-2 win over the Oberlin College men's soccer team on Wednesday night.
The Yeomen, who seem to have been snake-bitten for most of the season, once again ran into some touch luck on this night. Oberlin controlled the run of play throughout the game, evident by a 25-12 advantage in shots and 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Furthermore, OC had a season-high 17 shots on goal, but Gators keeper John Lichina was lights out as he made 15 saves on the night.
“I can't begin to tell you how frustrating this is,” Head Coach
Blake New said. “We worked our butts off all game and to not get the result we should have had really hurts.”
The Gators got on the board just 4:11 into the contest, but
Justin Griffiths would add the equalizer at the 22:21 mark with an assist coming from
Alen Cisija.
With less than 13 minutes left in regulation, Allegheny (7-5-3, 3-1-1 NCAC) would reclaim the lead, but Griffiths would add his second goal of the game and sixth of the season with just over two minutes to play to force the extra time. It was rookie
Joe Graybeal who provided the helper on this goal.
During the overtime periods, Oberlin triggered five total shots with one of its best chances at the end of the first overtime coming off the foot of Cisija, but Lichina denied it.
Oberlin had another promising chance in the second overtime off a corner kick opportunity, but
Ari Schwartz's attempt was blocked by a Gators' defender.
Zach Lipshultz made three saves, including one in the second overtime.
Oberlin (4-8-1, 1-1-1 NCAC) will look to bounce back when it plays host to Wittenberg University on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
