Oberlin, Ohio – Pete Sabo's redirect in the 104th minute lifted the Oberlin College men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win over the Allegheny College Gators on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.
“Wow this was big for us to get the win tonight,” Acting Head Coach Wes Davis said following the match. “I felt we had a real positive first half, but came out sluggish in the second half and that nearly cost us the match. However, we were fortunate and happy to come away with this victory, but we have a lot of things we need to correct before Saturday.”
The Yeomen led 3-1 at the half behind goals from
Justin Norman,
Skyler Dum and
Chris Campbell. The Gators (6-7-1, 1-4-1 NCAC) got on the board first just 12:19 into the contest, but Norman would net his first career goal less than a minute later with a laser-beam strike from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the goal.
Dum cashed in his team-leading seventh goal of the season on a great run down the middle of the field with a service coming from Sabo on the far side. Dum would return the favor, earning a helper of his own as he sent the ball to a wide-open Campbell on the outside – allowing him to finish the play in the lower left corner of the goal.
With a two goal lead late in the match, it appeared Oberlin (7-5-2, 2-3-1 NCAC) was going to cruise to victory, but Allegheny had other ideas – netting two scores over the final 11 minutes of regulation to force the extra time.
With neither team having a substantial scoring threat in the first overtime, The Yeomen took control of the tempo to start the second overtime period, pressuring the Gators' defense, which led to the game-winning heroics. On the play
David Lowe was on the far side and rifled the ball towards the middle of the box, but a heads-up move by Sabo to redirect the ball back to front part of the net caught Gators' goalie Andrew Shirley out of position.
Zach Lipshultz played all 103:25 in goal, making seven saves on the night.
The Gators out-shot Oberlin 22-14, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Both teams were even with five corner kicks each.
The Yeomen will look to ride the winning momentum into Saturday's showdown at The College of Wooster. The opening touch is set for 3:30 p.m.
