Yeoswimmers Sweep Ohio Wesleyan & Notre Dame College

January 24 – In their final meet of the regular season, the Oberlin College swimming and diving teams didn't disappoint as both squads upended Ohio Wesleyan and Notre Dame College on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeowomen checked in with 544 points, while the Falcons followed with 490 points and the host Bishops finished with 396. On the men's side, Oberlin totaled 593.5 points. OWU posted 379 points and NDC tallied 309.5.

“This was a great way to end our season and head into the conference meet,” head coach Mark Fino said. “Everyone swam well, and I look forward to carrying this momentum into the championship meet.”

The winning got underway in event five when Kelsey Sherman completed the 1,000-yard free in 11:09.91. The Yeowomen actually took the top three spots in the race as Jenny Meltz finished in 11:10.08, while first-year Lily Wennberg posted a mark of 11:37.21.

Oberlin also claimed first and second in the 400-yard IM with Sara Kadi touching in at 4:49.01, while Jane McIntyre followed in at 5:01.36. Kadi added wins in the 100-yard fly (1:01.32) and 200-yard fly (2:16.74).

In the 500-yard free, OC secured four out of the top five spots in the event. Senior Bryne Ulmschneider earned the win in 5:30.21. Sherman placed second (5:32.62), Meltz fourth (5:40.11) and Wennberg fifth (5:43.89).

First-year Flora Samis added a pair of wins in the 50-yard free (26.54) and 100-yard free (57.47).

The 800-yard free relay unit of Claire Baytas, Laura Fries, Meltz and Ulmschneider completed the course in 8:31.96 to win the event by nearly seven seconds.

The men's team was just as impressive on this day. Senior Scott McInerney recorded three individual wins for the Yeomen. He claimed the 100-yard fly in 54.74, 100-yard free in 50.04 and the 50-free in 22.70.

In the 100-yard fly, OC also locked up spots two through four. First-year Nick Lashway touched in behind McInerney at 56.54. Bud Stracker took third place in 57.38 and Corey Spiro was fourth with a time of 58.01. Lashway provided additional support with wins in the 100-yard back (55.14) and 200-yard back (2:02.33).

Spiro added an individual win in the 400-yard IM as he checked in at 4:36.30. Teammate Dimitri Macris was a close second at 4:36.98, while fellow Obie Mike Sabatka took third (4:41.32). The Spiro-Macris tandem also claimed the top two spots in the 200-yard fly with Spiro posting a time of 2:08.07 and Macris at 2:08.31. Macris added a win in the 1000-yard free after tapping the wall in 10:39.81.

Jon Vimr (5:09.18) and Sabatka (5:16.06) went one-two in the 500-yard free. Vimr also won the 200-yard free in 1:51.06.

Vimr, McInerney, Macris and Lashway combined to win the 800-yard free relay in 7:26.38.

Oberlin will now focus on preparing for the NCAC Championships on February 12-14 in Canton, Ohio.
