It came down the final event and the Yeowomen responded by nearly posting a school record, but it wasn't enough as the host Case Western Reserve Spartans edged the Oberlin College women's swimming and diving team 125-115 on day one of the Veale Classic.

The Spartans led by just one point heading into the 200 free relay and the foursome of Shannon Gallagher, Flora Samis, Jordan Jancosek and Sara Kadi checked in at 1:42.48, just 24-hundredths of a second off of a school record. Unfortunately, the CRWU unit touched at 1:42.08 to steal the win and the meet.

“It would have been great to get that win, but we still had a strong meet with both the men and women turning in good swims,” head coach Mark Fino said. “This was a good test as we gained a lot of experience. However, we still have a lot of work to do in order to improve as the season goes on and build off of the progress we have made as a program.”

In her first swim of the 1,650 yard free this season, sophomore Jenny Meltz was victorious in a time of 18:38.93. Teammate Kelsey Sherman placed third after completing the course in 19:01.17.

Looking to build off her first-year success, Kadi claimed the top spot in the 200-yard free with a mark of 1:58.82. She later returned to win in the 100 free in 55.02.

First-year Jane McIntyre joined Kadi with a pair of wins of her own – clocking in at 4:52.80 in the 400 IM and 1:02.29 in the 100-yard butterfly.

For the second meet in row, Christine Martin swept both diving events by recording 194.50 points on the 1-meter board and 199 points in the 3-meter event.

Gallagher added another win for the Yeowomen by going wall-to-wall in 25.72 in the 50-yard free.

The Yeomen also had some strong swims, but fell short 162-69 to the Spartans.

Oberlin ended strong with a victory in the 200 free relay as the tandem of Chris Canning, Bud Stracker, Nick Lashway and Scott McInerney recorded a mark of 128.62 to take top honors in the event.

First-year Jebran Haddad joined Lashway with solid individual efforts as well. Haddad placed second in the 100-yard breast at 1:01.64, while Lashway posted a mark of 54.95 in the 100-yard back to finish second in the event.

Freshman Dimitri Macris displayed his distance ability with a time of 17:46.05 in the 1,650 free - garnering a second-place finish.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday morning at Case at 10:30 a.m. against John Carroll.
