Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College swimming and diving teams opened their home meet with a strong showing on day one, recording multiple top-10 finishes across the freestyle, individual medley and relay events. Both the men's and women's teams sit fourth among eight teams heading into day two.
On the men's side, the Yeomen turned in several top-10 performances, led by a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of John Polylogidis, Emerson Rutherford-Parish, Jackson Shepler and Kye Marrero touched the wall in 1:28.09, while Oberlin's B team of Mark Sferra, Sean Carrera, Timothy Freel and Martin Gomez placed 10th in 1:32.85.
Marrero added a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.13. Polylogidis followed with an eighth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 21.97. In the 500-yard freestyle, Rutherford-Parish placed eighth in 4:57.58, followed by Shepler in 10th at 4:58.36. The men's 400-yard medley relay team of Gomez, Marrero, Rutherford-Parish and Polylogidis rounded out the top-10 finishes with a 10th-place time of 3:43.13.
The women's team also recorded several top-10 finishes across the relays and individual events. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the B team of Gretchen Lotter, Hailey Hamilton, Katherine Noller and Kendall McKelvey placed ninth in 1:45.63, followed closely by the A team of Soomin Yoo, Aubrey Chisholm, Cadyn Blanchard and Ari Marrero in 10th at 1:45.74.
Individually, Ari Marrero led the Crimson and Gold in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing eighth in 25.41. Noller paced Oberlin in the 500-yard freestyle with a fourth-place finish in 5:27.86, while Kaylee Johnson followed in eighth at 5:31.96.
Oberlin added two more top-10 finishes in the women's 400-yard medley relay. The A team of Chisholm, Yoo, Johnson and Ari Marrero placed seventh in 4:20.21, while the B team of Yasmeen Boulaknadal, Andie Kinstle, McKelvey and Lotter finished eighth in 4:20.69.
The Crimson and Gold return to Carr Pool tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, at 9 a.m. for day two of the home meet.
