Crimson and Gold Add to the Win Column

Sweet Briar, Virginia – After a win the day before, the Oberlin College field hockey team kept the good times rolling with a 1-0 victory over Sweet Briar on Sunday afternoon. The Crimson and Gold move to 2-1 on the season.

Janny McCormick earned the start in cage, clocking 60 minutes and making one save. The senior keeper clocks her second shutout this season and fifth in her career.

Oberlin got the first shot of the game off, a well-timed tap from Clare Kammeier that was stopped by the Vixens' defense. The offense continued to pepper Sweet Briar with through the quarter and carried that momentum into the second frame. Despite out-shooting SBC 9-1, the Crimson and Gold were unable get on the board.

Midway through the third, Bella Tilford broke loose in the midfield and drove the ball into the offensive end. Weaving through her defense, Tilford launched a shot from nearly 15 yards out to score the first goal of the game. Now with momentum, Paloma Szyfer, Elly Scheer, and Shelby Roth rattled off a trio of shots in the next 50 seconds.

Mary Rodman struck another two shots on goal to start the fourth, keeping the Vixens on their heels. Leila Burki gave Oberlin their best chance at scoring an insurance goal with a low shot at the 54:15 mark. Sweet Briar held off the hungry offense in the final minutes of the game, while Oberlin notches their second-straight win.

"Our team carried the same energy, mindset, and confidence from yesterday's win into today's game, and it made all the difference." The helm of the Crimson and Gold, Jess West, adds. "We continued with that same one-team mentality—connecting passes, controlling possession, swinging the field, and creating turnovers. That collective effort is what led to our success. We're proud of this 2–1 start and are excited to get back on the practice field this week as we prepare for Transylvania."

The squad returns home for their next match on Saturday, September 16. Oberlin welcomes Transylvania to Bailey Field for a 12 p.m. start.
