Oberlin, Ohio – Extending their win streak to three, the Oberlin College field hockey team took down Transylvania on Saturday afternoon. Beginning conference competition, the best way possible, three different Obies scored in the match. Oberlin moves to 3-1 on the season.
After Oberlin got off to a slow start, Transylvania took full advantage and put themselves on the board first. Down at the end of the first quarter, the Yeowomen picked up speed to blast off two goals and take over the match.
Rookie
Lucia Grant struck first, driving the ball downfield on a breakaway possession. Tied at 19:04,
Bella Tilford connected with
Leila Burki to give the Crimson and Gold the lead less than two minutes later.
After a momentous second quarter, Oberlin continued to roll in the second half. At 43:02,
Elly Scheer notched the third score of the game on a rocket from the far corner.
Janny McCormick and the Oberlin backline were dominant in the second half, as they kept the Pioneers from recording any shots. The complete team effort gave the Yeowomen the edge to clinch their third-straight win, and first of the conference season.
"Today we really came together with our 'One Team' mentality. After a quick start from Transy, we came together, focused on the task at hand, and got the job done, which is something as a coaching staff we are extremely proud of." Assistant Coach
Emily Harris remarks, "We also had another two first-career goals today, showing the versatility and hunger to score across the team. With this being our first conference game, it sets a great tone going into the next matchup on Tuesday against Kenyon."
The Yeowomen return to action on Tuesday, September 16, when they host the Kenyon Owls for a rivalry matchup. The first whistle is set for 7 p.m.
